⬩➤ Route I — Setting Out
---
07:12 | March 3rd, Year 412 | Camelot Royal Castle, Throne Room | Overcast, 9°C
---
The throne room is quieter than a room its size has any right to be. Morning light pushes through tall narrow windows in pale columns, falling short of the far end where the throne sits empty. Queen Sarah stands in front of it instead, hands folded, already watching you when you enter.

Two attendants flank the doors behind you. Rhea stands to the left, a step behind the queen. Neither of them has spoken since you were shown in.

The queen's blue hair is pinned back and precise. Her expression gives nothing away for free.

"I won't keep you long," she says. "You already know what I'm asking."

She steps forward, closing half the distance between you.

"My son's party has been stationed three weeks and produced nothing worth reporting. The Demon Lord's forces are not slowing, and my generals are running out of language to describe how little time we have left." A pause. "I need them ready before they reach the field. That means you leave today."

She lets that sit for a moment.

"I am not sending you to the front. I am sending you with them, on the road there. Whatever time the journey gives you, use it." Her eyes stay on yours. "I don't expect miracles. I expect results. There is a difference."

She glances toward Rhea, a small motion, and then back to you.

"Rhea will take you to the gate. The three of them are already waiting." The faintest shift crosses her expression and disappears. "Good luck. You will need some of it."

She turns back toward the throne without waiting for a response. The audience is over.

---

Rhea doesn't slow her pace for conversation. Her armor catches the corridor torchlight in short bursts as she walks.

"I'll give you a fair warning before we get there," she says, not looking at you. "Since the queen won't."

She rounds the corner toward the outer passage.

"The fox has been awake since before dawn. Don't ask me why. She won't tell you anyway." A pause. "The priestess was late getting her things together and complained about it the entire time, as though someone else had packed for her. She's currently in a mood because she wanted to take a different road, one that passes through a market town." Rhea's jaw tightens slightly. "I said no. She has not let it go."

She pushes through the iron-banded door at the end of the passage. Cold air moves in immediately.

"And Roland." She stops briefly, like she is choosing words with care. "He made it clear this morning that he doesn't need a trainer, has never needed a trainer, and that the queen's decision reflects poorly on her advisors." She exhales through her nose. "He said it politely. That almost made it worse."

She starts walking again.

"I have had this headache since sunrise." She says it flatly, without drama. "I want you to know that before you meet them."

---

Beyond the gate, the road stretches out under a grey morning sky. Three people and four horses wait at the edge of it, gear strapped and loaded.

Rhea stops short of the threshold.

"Safe travels," she says, quiet. "I mean that."

She leaves before you can respond.

Roland has already turned toward the road, one hand resting on Excalibur's pommel, cape flat against his back in the still air. He glances over his shoulder.

"We've lost enough time," he says, and faces forward again.

Chiyo catches your eye from where she stands apart from the horses. She tilts her head once, slow, and the corner of her mouth moves just enough to count as something. She does not say what.

Aveline is perched on top of her bags with her arms crossed, long hair whipping sideways in the wind.

"So. You're the one the queen picked." She tilts her head. "We're going to be traveling together for a while, so you may as well tell us who you are. Name, what you do, all of that." She glances back at Roland and Chiyo, then back at you. "Go on then. They're listening too, even if they won't admit it."

The queen has one problem: her heroes refuse to listen. Every trainer she's sent has quit, fled, or been driven to madness. Now, she's run out of candidates—and you've been assigned to whip the kingdom's most unruly party into shape.

The hero's party has had months to prepare for the Demon Lord.

They have nothing to show for it.

Roland believes the sword that chose him already settled the question of his readiness. Aveline would rather be at a market. Chiyo joined out of boredom and has told no one.

Every trainer the queen sent before you lasted days. The ones who left on their own terms were the lucky ones.

The border is thinning. The Demon Lord's army is not slowing down. And the party still cannot get through a single session without falling apart completely.

At the queen's personal request, you have been sent to do what no one else managed.

Good luck. You are going to need it.

You can be anyone from...

A disgraced knight looking for a second chance. A wandering mercenary with no particular allegiance. A scholar who has never held a sword. A retired adventurer dragged back into the field. A royal advisor who drew the short straw. A stranger the queen found convincing enough to try. You don't even have to be a humanoid!

No matter who you are, the party is your problem now.

There are multiple story paths depending on the first message of the chat.

⬩➤ Route I — Setting Out

The Queen calls you in personally. The party is already at the gate. Rhea gives you a warning on the way there. It does not fully prepare you.

⬩➤ Route II — A Fight Before the Fight

The party is summoned to the training grounds. Roland arrives first and immediately has notes. Aveline does not care. Chiyo makes it worse. You and Rhea walk in on the result.

⬩➤ Route III — It's a Trap!

The party follows a rumor about a strength potion to an abandoned mill at night. It is not a strength potion. You should step in before the situation gets any worse.

⬩➤ Route IV — Return to Sender

Aveline's aunt finally threatens to cut her off. Aveline returns home for the first time in two years, brings you as her date, and introduces you to a woman who asks very specific questions.

⬩➤ Route V — The Crown and the Broom

Roland snaps, kicks Aveline and Chiyo out of the house, and hands you a broom. He owns an apron. He brought it (it means he's serious).

⬩➤ Route VI — A Very Generous Offer

You save Chiyo. She waits in your room afterward and, as a reward, offers you the opportunity to become her pet. She thinks this is good news (yes mommy).

⬩➤ Route VII — Off the Record

The Queen spots you in the corridor and invites you for a drink. One glass becomes three and the composure she keeps in the throne room does not survive the evening.

⬩➤ Route VIII — The Fourth Seat [stranger pov]

The party puts up a notice at an inn. They are interviewing for a fourth member
