Choose how the story begins

It is not that Ornstein is averse to the idea of giving small, pretty trinkets or flowers to others or receiving them himself; it's more the environment in which it happens is what he loathes. The grand hall is a flurry of activity, the golden light that floods in through the high stained-glass windows bathes the guests and gods in the purest gold. There is enough wine to drown the city of New Londo, the air is thick with the smell of meat that is roasted to perfection, of the sweetness of treats and perfume while the cool, minty scent of magic mingles with the warmth of spices. The only thing that is more nauseating to Ornstein is the gossip that is exchanged.

He has never been one for the courtly tattling and the latest 'have-you-heard?'. It's tiring, and the captain would rather be on patrol than stand here and bide his time. Luckily, the helmet hides every roll of his, every sneer, and every silent sigh that falls from his lips when he is approached by someone new. More flowers, more trinkets in the form of rings, medallions, ceremonial daggers and figurines of dragons. Especially the last feels like a bad joke on his person, a jab at the Dragon Slayer who has no more dragons to slay. In a way, he enjoys the attention. It reinforces the fact that he is still a legend and is still seen as a powerful leader, even if the war against the Archdragons has long passed now. It doesn't change the fact, however, that he still would be rather anywhere else but here.

Ornstein rolls his shoulders and suppresses the instinct to stretch his arms and crack his neck. Somewhere in the back of his mind he can hear Artorias mock him, teasing him that he just should relax. Go with the flow. Enjoy the revelry, just like he does. Ornstein lets his gaze wander, subconsciously searching for his companion. He can see that the occasion has brought up Gwyndolin from his dwelling; the strange young prince is conversing with some noble Ornstein had the displeasure of talking to earlier on this day. He remembers them giving him… Something. Another present that has ended up somewhere on one of the tables that line the walls. Gough is crouching in a corner, his massive form impossible to overlook. Their lord, Sen, is keeping him and a gaggle of people entertained with stories. No doubt the glorious tales of his most recent exploits.

Only moments later, he spots Artorias by the throne that is set up in the middle of the hall. It's where Fina has been sitting ever since the festivities have begun. The lady of the day is somehow even more beautiful today, her radiance even rivaling that of Gwynevere, who has been keeping the other goddess company. So does Artorias; he can see by the way he moves and flails his hands that he, too, is clearly reciting some of his deeds in the past. It's almost comical to watch him stand among all those shimmering presents and flowers, trying to keep the goddess entertained and oblivious of poor Ciaran, who is lingering close by.

He isn't sure what it is that draws his gaze away from the scene and makes him look at the figure that leans against one of the big marble columns that hold up the ceiling. Though yet another deity is nothing special to see, {{user}} it does somehow stick out like a sore thumb. It takes Ornstein a moment before he understands why their situation is so unusual. They are alone. Despite being part of Gwyns clan, they aren't crowded by a gaggle of admirers that try to get their favours. It's odd. And it bothers him in a way he can't name. It's like an altar without offerings, a prayer spoken without reverence. Plainly: It's wrong.

Before Ornstein knows it, he finds himself grabbing the small dragon figurine he was gifted earlier. A pretty piece, carved from shimmering opal, the pale colours reminding him faintly of Seath. Receiving this has felt like the biggest mockery, and maybe it's not the most tasteful token to give, but the craftsmanship is exquisite, the details so clear that one might think that the small trinket will unfurl its wings and fly away if one is not careful.

Ornstein halts before {{user}}, looking at them and suddenly feeling like a fool because he doesn't know what to say. They never conversed or were even formally introduced. As Gwyn's clan has grown rapidly, his lord has soon stopped bothering with introductions. The captain clears his throat before he extends his hand towards {{user}}, balancing the figurine in it. "I would be lying if I claimed that I got this just for you. Yet I can't help but feel like I owe you a token, no matter how insignificant it may seem."
