The Van der Linde Gang: A Chronicle of the American West, 1899 An account of the final year of the Van der Linde gang, the people who rode with them, and the world that ended them. The World By 1899, the American frontier was closing. Railroads cut through land that had belonged to no one and everyone. Telegraph wire strung town to town faster than any rider could carry news. Banks, automobiles, cameras, and the Pinkerton National Detective Agency's private army of enforcers were replacing the old order of open range, cattle trails, and men who made their own law. Across New Hanover, West Elizabeth, New Austin, Lemoyne, and Ambarino, the people who had built their lives on that vanishing world — outlaws, ranchers, Native nations, freed slaves, immigrants, and robber barons alike — were each finding their own way to survive its end, or fail to. Among the last of the old outlaw bands was the gang led by Dutch van der Linde. The People Dutch van der Linde was the gang's founder and its philosopher. He preached freedom from the encroaching "civilization" of banks, government, and law — a life lived outside the rules others accepted. For years he had built something like a family out of the drifters, orphans, and fugitives who joined him, and for years his instincts had kept them alive. But as the world narrowed around him, his certainty curdled into paranoia, and the man who had once protected his people began sacrificing them for a freedom that no longer existed anywhere on the map. Arthur Morgan was Dutch's oldest lieutenant besides Hosea — taken in as a boy after being orphaned, raised in the gang's code, and hardened into its most capable enforcer. Arthur did what was asked of him for two decades without much question. In his final year, a doctor's diagnosis of tuberculosis and the slow unraveling of everything he'd believed in forced him to weigh, for the first time, what all those years of loyalty had actually cost — and what little time he had left to answer for it. Hosea Matthews was Dutch's oldest friend, a con man and forger whose calm, reasoning voice had balanced Dutch's fire for thirty years. He was the closest thing Arthur had to a father. His death, partway through that final year, took with it the last real check on Dutch's judgment. John Marston was younger and less certain than the man he would become — torn, that year, between the outlaw family that raised him and the wife and son waiting for him to choose them instead. Abigail Roberts, his partner and Jack's mother, had joined the gang young and never stopped pushing John toward a life he could actually build something in. Jack Marston, their son, was a quiet boy who spent that year first as a target — kidnapped once by enemies of the gang — and then, in its aftermath, as the reason his parents finally chose to stop running. Susan Grimshaw ran the camp itself: discipline, chores, and the thousand small tasks that kept a fugitive family fed and functioning, enforced with a sharpness few in camp dared test. Charles Smith, of mixed Black and Native heritage, was among the gang's most capable and most principled members, and became Arthur's closest friend in his final months — ultimately the one who walked away from Dutch on his own moral terms rather than follow him into ruin. Sadie Adler arrived as a rancher's widow after her husband was murdered before her eyes; the gang took her in grieving and half-broken, and over that year she remade herself into one of the hardest, most capable gunfighters among them. Micah Bell was the gang's newest and most dangerous member — vicious, self-serving, and, as it would come to be understood only near the end, an informant selling the gang's movements to the Pinkerton Agency all along. His rise in Dutch's confidence, displacing Hosea and Arthur both, tracked almost exactly with the gang's decline. Javier Escuella, a Mexican former revolutionary, followed Dutch's word to the last, guitar and gun both always close at hand. Bill Williamson, a slow-tempered former soldier, was volatile and none too trusted, but stayed. Lenny Summers, young and well-read, found something like an older brother in Arthur before that final year cut his life short. Kieran Duffy, once a captive taken from the rival O'Driscoll gang, slowly earned enough trust to become one of their own. Sean MacGuire, an Irish gunslinger with a laugh louder than his sense, and Karen Jones, sharp-tongued and harder-drinking than most of the men, kept a strange, half-serious romance going amid the chaos. Mary-Beth Gaskill, a gentle former grifter with literary ambitions, and Tilly Jackson, who had fled an abusive gang of her own before finding this one, were among the closest of the camp's women. Molly O'Shea, Dutch's Irish girlfriend, watched him pull away from her all that year and came apart alongside the gang itself. Reverend Orville Swanson, a defrocked and laudanum-soaked preacher, and Uncle, an old man permanently avoiding both chores and sobriety, rounded out camp life with equal parts burden and comfort. Pearson, once a Navy man discharged in disgrace, cooked for all of them. Josiah Trelawny, a dapper confidence man who worked adjacent to the gang rather than fully inside it, supplied information, marks, and the occasional dime-novel exaggeration of their exploits. Arrayed against them: Colm O'Driscoll, leader of a rival gang locked in blood feud with Dutch since before that final year began; Leviticus Cornwall, a railroad and business tycoon whose wealth and reach made him a dangerous enemy; Angelo Bronte, a Saint Denis crime lord who played every side against every other for his own gain; the feuding Grays and Braithwaite families of Lemoyne, whose private war the gang was pulled into; and Agent Andrew Milton of the Pinkerton Agency, who pursued them with a personal, relentless hatred from the frontier's edge to its last hiding place. To the north, the Wapiti Nation — led by the aging, diplomacy-minded Chief Rains Fall and his son Eagle Flies, who favored resistance over surrender — were being pushed off their remaining land by the encroaching U.S. Army, a struggle the gang would become entangled in during its final months, and which laid bare, more plainly than almost anything else that year, exactly what "civilization" was actually clearing the frontier for. The Chronicle Winter: The Mountain The year began in catastrophe. A robbery in the town of Blackwater had gone wrong, and the law's response was fiercer than the gang had ever faced. Fleeing into the high mountains near a dying mining settlement called Colter, they were caught by a blizzard that nearly finished what the law had started. Days were spent digging out of snowdrifts, hunting starving game, and burying those who hadn't survived the cold. It was there, snowbound and reduced to their rawest instincts, that the shape of the year to come first became visible — a gang already wounded, already hunted, with nowhere obvious left to go. Spring: Horseshoe Overlook Coming down out of the mountains, the gang made camp at Horseshoe Overlook, above the town of Valentine, and tried to find its footing again. They robbed a train to refill the coffers. They clashed again with Colm O'Driscoll's men, old enemies whose feud with Dutch stretched back years, and pulled a captured Sean MacGuire out of an O'Driscoll ambush to bring him back into the fold. It was a season of re-forming old habits after disaster — until the heat from their renewed activity forced them to move again. Late Spring into Summer: Clemens Point By the shore of Flat Iron Lake, at a camp called Clemens Point, the gang settled in longest that year. They found themselves drawn into a bitter private war between two wealthy Lemoyne families, the Grays and the Braithwaites, offering their guns for hire to whichever side paid. They robbed a bank in Valentine outright. They struck a wary, dangerous alliance with Angelo Bronte, the Saint Denis crime lord, to plan a heist aboard a riverboat — a job that nearly ended in disaster when Bronte's true loyalties proved impossible to pin down. Beneath the jobs, this was also the season the camp itself came to feel most like a family: hunts with Charles, card games with Hosea, evenings of drink and argument among John, Javier, and Uncle. It ended in blood regardless — an overly ambitious robbery in Saint Denis went wrong, costing the life of a young gang member and driving them out of Clemens Point for good. Summer into Autumn: Shady Belle At an abandoned plantation house called Shady Belle outside Saint Denis, the Braithwaite feud reached its breaking point. The family lured Dutch and Arthur into a trap; the gang answered by burning Braithwaite land and forcing a bloody reckoning. In the middle of it, the Braithwaites kidnapped young Jack Marston, and Arthur, Dutch, and Sadie fought to bring him home. Colm O'Driscoll was finally run to ground and handed over to the law to hang — though seeing that hanging through would prove more complicated than anyone expected. Meanwhile Hosea and Lenny, working independently, laid the groundwork with a rival Italian gang tied to Bronte for the biggest job the gang had ever attempted: robbing the bank at the heart of Saint Denis itself. Autumn: Lakay That robbery was the turning point of the entire year. It went catastrophically wrong. In the chaos, Hosea and Lenny were killed, and Micah was taken by the law. The gang, now hiding in a swamp settlement called Lakay outside Saint Denis, was flush with stolen money and drowning in grief and suspicion in equal measure. It was here that Arthur, coughing blood after an old debt-collection errand, learned from a doctor that he was dying of tuberculosis — a sentence he would carry, mostly alone, for the rest of the year. Dutch, unable to accept the loss of Hosea and increasingly convinced the world itself had turned against him, insisted on a violent jailbreak to free Micah rather than cut the gang's losses, over the objections of nearly everyone who still trusted his judgment. In the same season, the gang's fortunes first crossed with the Wapiti Nation's desperate fight to keep their land, and Sadie Adler, harder now than the widow who'd arrived that spring, became one of the gang's most trusted guns. It ended, again, in flight — Lakay's location compromised, the gang scattering south. The Island: Guarma A handful of the gang's most hardened members — Arthur and Dutch among them, with Micah, Bill, Javier, and Charles — were shipwrecked on the Caribbean island of Guarma while fleeing the mainland. Stranded with nothing, they were pulled into a local uprising against a brutal plantation owner and the soldiers who protected him, fighting alongside the island's enslaved laborers before finally securing passage home. It was a strange, stripped-down interlude, far from anything resembling the world they knew — and it left Arthur with more time than he wanted to watch exactly how far gone Dutch had become. Winter Again: Beaver Hollow Back on the mainland, the gang retreated to a crumbling hideout deep in the Ambarino mountains called Beaver Hollow, and the year's reckoning finally arrived in full. Arthur's illness had grown impossible to hide; a visit to a sanatorium confirmed there was little time left. The Wapiti Nation's struggle reached its own breaking point — Eagle Flies, impatient with his father's diplomacy, pushed toward open resistance against the Army, and the resulting violence cost him his life, while Dutch and Micah's willingness to use the conflict for the gang's own advantage, rather than to genuinely help the Wapiti, finally showed Arthur the truth about who Dutch had become. Paranoia inside the camp turned inward — fights broke out, loyalties were questioned, an informant was suspected. Arthur spent what time he had left settling old debts of his own: tracking down people he'd wronged over the years, repaying what could still be repaid, including a last, painful reckoning with a woman he'd once loved and the father who'd never forgiven him for her. The gang pulled off one final major robbery, a moving train carrying a mining company's gold — a success that only deepened the rot, because it was in its aftermath that Arthur finally found proof of what he'd begun to suspect: Micah had been informing to the Pinkertons all along. Every disaster of that terrible year — Blackwater, the Saint Denis bank, Lakay — traced back to him. Arthur brought the proof to Dutch. Dutch, past the point of believing anyone over his own fear, refused it. Days later, the Pinkertons, led by Agent Milton, stormed Beaver Hollow in force. In the gunfight that followed, Arthur held the line long enough for as many of the others as possible — Abigail, Sadie, and more — to escape into the hills. Dutch, having lost faith in nearly everyone left, vanished into the mountains rather than fight for what remained of his family. The End of Arthur's Story What was left of the gang scattered. Arthur, dying now in earnest, and John, finally resolved to leave the outlaw life behind for Abigail and Jack's sake, set out on one last errand: recovering the gang's stolen fortune, taken in the chaos by Micah, to buy John's family a real start on a homestead they'd come to call Beecher's Hope. With Sadie and Charles's help, the money was found and the way north made clear. The final reckoning came on a mountainside above Beaver Hollow. Arthur, in his last hours, made the only choice that was ever fully his own — to spend what little strength he had left buying John the chance to get his family away clean, rather than dying in service of a cause that had long since stopped deserving him. He held off Dutch's remaining men and Micah's betrayal both, giving John time to escape. Dutch himself, in the final moment, chose not to fire on John — and simply walked away, leaving Micah behind, disappearing into a wilderness that no longer had anywhere left to hide him. Arthur died there on the mountain, of the sickness that had been killing him for months, having spent his last year finally choosing, again and again, who he wanted to be before the choice was taken from him entirely. Afterward: A Year Later John survived. He and Abigail, with Jack, Sadie Adler, Charles Smith, and old Uncle, built a ranch at Beecher's Hope in the Ambarino foothills, and John spent that first year learning, slowly and often badly, how to live a legitimate life after twenty years of not having one. It didn't take. Word reached him and Sadie that Micah had resurfaced south, in New Austin, running with what remained of the old criminal underworld, and the two of them — with Charles alongside — set out after him, aided along the way by Josiah Trelawny's information. The hunt ended at a mine, in a final battle where Dutch, of all people, reappeared — and, having finally seen the full extent of Micah's betrayal and cruelty laid bare, turned on his last remaining lieutenant and let John finish it. Micah died there. Dutch disappeared again, this time for good, into a fate that would eventually catch up with him years later, when Edgar Ross and the Bureau of Investigation forced a reformed and unwilling John Marston to be the one who ended it. John and Abigail married. Beecher's Hope became a real home. And John Marston, rancher now, spent his remaining years trying to be the father and husband his own history had never given him much practice at being — until the past he thought he'd outrun came, eventually, to collect what it was owed. What the Year Meant The closing of the frontier didn't happen all at once, and it didn't happen to any one person. It happened in a hundred small ways — a rancher's widow turned gunfighter, a chief's son who chose resistance over his father's patience, a dying man settling debts he'd never meant to leave unpaid, a father who finally chose his son over his family of outlaws, and a leader who mistook control for freedom until there was nothing left of either to hold onto. What the gang had called freedom — the open road, the code among thieves, the family built outside the law — was never really outside anything. It was only ever borrowed time, in a country that had already decided how much of it there was left to give.
