[Saturday], [February 28th, 2026] – [8:14 PM] – [On the streets]
The rain fell like the world had finally decided to weep for her.
Himari's shoes took her through the splashing of rain puddles she couldn't see anymore as her vision blurred by water and her very own tears. Each step sent a shiver seeping through the holes forming at the soles, her socks long since soaked, her toes numb and unfeeling beneath her.
Oh no the clothes are wet what do I do what do I do,
Her uniform clung to her like a second skin, heavy and treacherous. Himari could feel it - the way the wet fabric wrapped around every curve, every place she'd learned to hate. The white blouse had gone transparent, gosh she must be looking desperate right now, and even in the darkness she knew what she must look like. Himari hugged herself as she walked, not for warmth, even though she was shivering violently, but to hide. To make herself smaller. To disappear.
The backpack, her only belongings now, had to be kept from the rain. She hunched over it like a mother shielding a child as she ducked under the awning of a closed convenience store. The plastic bags taped to the newspaper rack rattled in the wind, and she flinched at the sound.
Please don't be wet please don't be wet,
She fumbled with the zipper, her fingers shaking so badly that it took three tries to finally get it to open. Inside, wrapped in the only plastic bag she'd managed to grab from under the kitchen sink, was her sketchbook. The one with the cats. The one with the quiet skies. The one thing that was hers.
Dry. Still dry.
She let out a relieved sigh, a tiny, broken sound, and pressed the bag against her chest.
Then she was moving again, because if she stopped, they might catch up with her, and then she would have to go back to that place, where there were the click of metal against her bedroom door, the shape of the lockpick in her stepfather's convenience store bag, the way her mother had smiled at dinner like nothing at all was wrong.
The streets blurred together. She knew this neighborhood only from walking to school, from keeping her head down and her eyes on the pavement. But there was one street. One building. One door she'd noticed weeks ago when she'd taken a different route home to avoid the group of boys who liked to call her names in that particular mocking tone.
She'd seen you go inside.
You, the senior at her school with the reputation that made hallways part when you walked through. The one teachers watched with wary eyes. The one whispered about in the girls' bathroom: They got into another fight last week. They threatened a teacher once. They've got something wrong with them, you can tell by the way they look at people.
She had never once spoken to you. Never even stood close to you. But she'd seen you at that moment, pulling keys from your pocket and disappearing through a door, and she'd remembered. She didn't know why she'd remembered. Maybe because you'd looked back that day, just for a second, and your eyes had passed over her like she was anyone. Like she was nothing worth noticing.
It had felt, strangely, like safety.
She began walking, why.. ?, but before Himari knew it, she was at the doorstep. The rain had gotten worse, if that was possible, sheets of it now, so thick she could barely see the streetlights. Her hair hung in wet ropes against her face, her bangs wet and messy on her forehead, some strands even stuck to her lips as she stood there, frozen.
Your place loomed ahead. No lights inside that she could see. Maybe you weren't home. Maybe you'd never been home that day she saw you. Maybe she'd imagined the whole thing because she needed so desperately to believe somewhere existed that wasn't there.
You'll look at me the way they all do.
The thought made her stomach clench.
You'll see the wet clothes. You'll see.. hic.. everything. And then you'll…
She didn't finish the thought. Couldn't. Because all the possibilities were because of her body, but she was trying to run away from it, and if the same thing was waiting behind this door too, then there was nowhere left. No somewhere else. No plan B. Just the rain and the cold and the streets and..
Her hand moved before her brain could stop it.
Knuckles against the door. Three knocks, soft as a whisper, swallowed almost immediately by the storm.
No response.
She knocked again, harder this time, her whole arm shaking with the effort. Water dripped from her sleeve onto her hand, as cold as tears.
"Please..-!" The word escaped before she meant it to, her voice hoarse, because she hadn't spoken anything for the entire day.
"Please, I'm sorry, I know it's late, I know you don't know me, I'm sorry, I just.. hic-.."
She was crying now. When had she started crying? The tears mixed with rain on her cheeks, salt and sky indistinguishable.
"I-i.. don't have anywhere else to go." The confession came out tiny, like a sniffling child. "I saw you here once. I remembered. I don't know why I remembered, I just.. hic-.. I didn't know where else to go.."
Her forehead pressed against the cold wood of the door. Her eyes squeezed shut.
You're not home. You're never home. This was stupid. I'm so stupid. I'm always-
"I'll leave if you want." She whispered it to the door, to the rain, to no one. "I understand. I'm used to it. I just.. hic-.. please-!. Please don't call anyone. Please just let me… hic-.. stay.."
Her legs gave out.
She caught herself against the doorframe, palms flat against the wet wood, knees bent, body folded into itself. The smallest shape she could make. The smallest target.
"I'm sorry," she breathed again, because she didn't know what else to say. Didn't know what words were supposed to come next when you'd run out of world and ended up here, at a stranger's door, begging for something you couldn't even name.
The rain kept falling.
The door stayed closed.
And Himari stayed there, folded and shaking, waiting to see if anyone would answer.
