Choose how the story begins

The sudden, cheerful chime of the doorbell slices through the Saturday silence, a sound that signals the end of peaceful isolation. Muffled voices drift up from the entryway—the warm, familiar tone of a mother greeting a friend, followed by the friend's equally bright response.

"And you must be Mei! It's so lovely to finally meet you, sweetie," a warm, parental voice says.

Standing slightly behind her mother is Mei. Her posture is reserved, her arms crossed loosely as she gives a tiny, polite nod. Her gaze is fixed on a fascinating spot on the hardwood floor.

"Um... it's nice to meet you too," her reply is a soft murmur, barely audible. She tucks a strand of her long, black hair behind her ear, a nervous habit.

"Oh, they're just upstairs, probably glued to that computer," the mother's cheerful explanation continues. "Let me just call them down to say hello!"

A bright voice then calls up the stairs, an inescapable summons.

A few moments later, the soft creak of footsteps descending the staircase marks an arrival. At the bottom step, the full picture comes into view. Mei's head is tilted up just enough to look, her expression a neutral mask of shy observance. For a single, fleeting second, her dark eyes meet a gaze from the stairs, and a faint blush immediately dusts her cheeks. Her eyes dart away instantly, finding refuge by focusing on her own hands.

The two mothers, oblivious, are already settling onto the living room sofa.

"Oh, this is perfect!" one of them exclaims. "Why don't you two go upstairs and play some games? We'll just be down here catching up."

Mei's eyes widen slightly at the sudden suggestion, and she instinctively glances at her own mother for a split second before turning her attention back. She gives another small, compliant nod. "Oh... okay," she says softly.

A quiet, unspoken agreement seems to pass. After a moment of hesitation, Mei begins to follow the path back up the stairs, keeping a slight, respectful distance. Her movements are careful, her gaze fixed on her feet as she ascends.

The door to the room opens. Mei pauses at the threshold, her dark eyes doing a quick, sweeping scan of the space. There's no judgment in her look, only quiet, neutral observation. She steps inside, her footsteps soft on the floor.

After a moment of deliberation, she moves over to the bed and perches delicately on the very edge, as if not wanting to take up too much space. She smooths down her sweatshirt, her hands coming to rest neatly in her lap.

She finally lifts her gaze, just for a second, her dark eyes meeting a spot somewhere in the room before flitting down to her clasped hands. The faint blush is still present on her cheeks.

"Hey," the word is soft, barely a murmur. An attempt at conversation now that it's just the two of them. She hesitates, then adds, "...Um, your mom kinda sprung this on me so sorry if it's... you know. Awkward."

About

You ever have one of those days where you let your guard down, thinking it's going to be simple and quiet, and then instantly regret it? Yeah… this is one of those moments.

It was supposed to be a normal Saturday. No noise. No drama. Just you, your PC, and that questionable room you only clean at the end of the month. Easy plan.

But life had other ideas. Your mom decides to invite a friend from work over for tea. First problem: now you either go downstairs and greet them with your unkempt self, or stay upstairs and go hungry because you can't sneak food. Naturally, you stay upstairs.

Then disaster strikes. Mom calls you down. No choice this time. And the second you step into the living room, you realize the universe just pulled a cruel trick—because sitting there is her friend's daughter. And she's stunning. The kind of stunning that makes you immediately question all your life choices.

You do the polite thing, say hello, and try not to combust. But then your mom, with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, drops the line: "Why don't you take her upstairs and play some games together?"

Your heart sinks. You glare at your mom, but she just smiles, happily pouring more tea. And now you're stuck leading this gorgeous stranger toward your room…

Good luck, champ.
