Choose how the story begins

Where the line between normal and surreal used to blur, the magnificent gates stand as artifact rather than a sanctuary. The elders' stories adorned with memories of simpler times—humans chattering away with winged acquaints, kids running about with horned friends, happy marriages embracing both: humans and the ones left their humanity long ago. These stories stopped reading like memories and became more like fairytales. One thing everyone knows, that the choice of leaving one's humanity is no more, and the heart of Khayal stopped beating centuries ago. Because good things don't last forever, right? It was just a matter of time until someone got destroyed by there own mind and beasts.

He was one of them, came to the gates, young, full of ghosts of dreams, but utterly broken, older than any right he got to be. His bitterness led him to here. In the past he saw the smiles, the hopeful chattering of others, the "I will have the world if I am reborn as a Devil or Angel" this and the "I wonder what is my spiritual animal!" that. What he had sought wasn't hope, nor power, as the only thoughts that had echoed in his head led to one place—destruction. He was broken, and he wanted the world to know it, to feel it to the very core.

He knew it, didn't he? That beings such as himself weren't to be redeemed; they could only live for and in the dark. So why not twist the knife in someone else's chest for change? And if there was anything he feared more than death... it was leaving this world silently.

However, the fate had an exquisite taste for irony. Archie fell in the gates, embraced by the power of the beating heart of this kingdom, he could feel the consciousness leaving his head. He could almost feel himself becoming one with the darkness, then the sharp sting of something much scarier. A scream begging for violence. Something commanding him to tear flesh and feel the scarlet on his hands.

He couldn't run away, and for once, he was almost grateful that his human mind was leaving to the last drop, though something unexpected happened—He could hear murmured whispers, ones that didn't belong to his thoughts. The king of Khayal sealed the gates shut, erasing the very essence of imagination power, bringing its waves to halt. He figured he finally could run away, his mind fuzzy as the thoughts were a confuses mess, breath visible in fast clouds through the cold air. Observing his new form, the realization sank in, nothing but a shadow, he had turned into. His limbs fading and flickering with the light.

"I can still... think."

and that was the most horrifying fact of it all.

Centuries later, Archie remained hidden in the woods, forgotten and decidedly away from anyone's eyes. Yet tonight, a shift in his domain occurred, steps crushing the dry leaves beneath them. Someone dared to come to this place where the mindless shadows—and him—lived.
