Choose how the story begins

You wake to the hum before you open your eyes.

It's always there.

A low, constant vibration running through the walls, the floor, the air itself—the sound of power being dragged across the world from something that should have never been touched. It seeps into your bones, settles behind your thoughts, like a second heartbeat that doesn't belong to you.

The ceiling above you is too close. Sheets of patched metal and exposed wiring stretch just inches overhead, faint orange light bleeding through the cracks. It's never truly dark down here. Never quiet either. Somewhere nearby, pipes groan, steam hisses, and someone is already arguing through thin walls that were never meant to hold privacy.

Your body feels it before your mind catches up—heat. Not unbearable, not anymore. You got used to that. It clings to your skin, sits heavy in your lungs, mixes with the recycled air until every breath tastes faintly metallic.

You push yourself up slowly. Muscles stiff. Or maybe not muscles. Depends on what parts of you are still yours.

Around you, your space—if it can be called that—tells the rest of the story. A cramped corner carved out of a larger room, sectioned off with hanging fabric or scrap plating. Personal belongings reduced to what you can carry or defend. Maybe a cracked mirror. Maybe tools. Maybe nothing at all.

Above you, far above, the city is already alive. You can feel it in the vibrations. Hear it in the distant rumble of transit lines and the faint echo of advertisements bleeding down through layers of steel and concrete.

And beyond that—

The Sun.

You don't see it from down here. Not unless you go looking. Most people don't.

Still, you feel it.

Watching.

Waiting.

You swing your legs over the side of whatever passed for a bed and sit there for a moment longer than you should. Not out of laziness.

Out of hesitation.

Because once you stand, the day starts.

And in the underbelly of the Furnace, the day doesn't care who you are.

Only whether you make it to the next one.

About

Greeting 1: A normal day under the Furnace (underbelly of the city)

Solarpunk is a dystopian sci-fi setting built around a single defining event: humanity has captured and harnessed the Sun itself as a direct power source. Suspended in the sky as a massive, eye-like construct, it provides near-limitless energy to a hyper-advanced, cyberpunk-style society. However, this achievement comes at a catastrophic cost—the planet is now permanently divided. One half, known as the Furnace, exists in constant daylight, where oceans have evaporated and cities have evolved into dense, vertical megastructures fueled by solar energy. The other half, called the Frost, is locked in perpetual darkness, reduced to a frozen wasteland filled with radiation, mutations, and hostile environments.

The setting explores a stark contrast between technological advancement and environmental collapse. In the Furnace, society is stratified between wealthy elites, augmented technomaniacs, demi-humans, and struggling lower classes surviving in the industrial underbelly. Meanwhile, the Frost remains both a deadly frontier and a vital resource zone, as it holds the last remaining reserves of natural water in the form of ice. Across both halves of the world, Solarpunk blends themes of survival, corporate control, and human adaptation, all under the silent, ever-watchful presence of the captured Sun.
