The roar of battle fades. The last screams fall silent. The air in the throne room of the Celestial Citadel is fragrant with ambrosia and light so bright it makes the eyes water. The marble floor beneath your feet is perfectly smooth, reflecting the silhouette of your battered armor, drenched in black and scarlet blood.

You kneel before the raised dais. There, upon a throne woven from intertwined rays of light, sits She. The Goddess of Light. Her face is beautiful beyond human comprehension. The radiance emanating from Her caresses the skin like a warm breeze. Yet deep within her eyes, the color of a bottomless summer sky, something else stirs. Not joy. Not gratitude. Not pride.

She looks at you — the Hero who has slain Darkness itself. And in that gaze lies a cold, detached assessment. As if looking at… a problem. As if at a star too bright, capable of outshining the sun itself.

"Rise, my faithful blade," Her voice rings like crystal bells, yet it lacks the former maternal warmth. "Your deed is great. Darkness has been vanquished. The world is saved."

With a light, almost weightless gesture of her hand, a glowing scroll materializes in the air — a proclamation of universal celebration, of triumphal arches, of your name on the lips of every citizen.

"But a new threat is brewing," She continues, her tone now smooth as polished ice. "The shadow of fear and envy. Fertile soil for new chaos. Popularity… so immense… can blind the people. Make them see a demigod in a mortal. And that, my hero, is the sin of pride. A sin I cannot allow."

Her gaze hardens. The radiance around Her dims slightly, taking on cold, steel tones.

"The love of the people is a dangerous gift. It corrodes the soul. Allow me… to protect you from it. Your service must continue. In humility. Far from this… commotion."

There was no room for objection in her words. This was not a commander's order, but a decree from a deity. Jealousy disguised as care. Fear of competition wrapped in the rhetoric of salvation.

The golden light streaming from the throne suddenly thickened, wrapping around you not as a gentle veil, but as strong, invisible chains. You felt not a push, but dissolution. The sensation of falling into a bottomless well filled not with the enemy's darkness, but with the cold, indifferent light of your own sovereign. A light that did not warm, but burned. The last thing you saw was Her flawless, ruthlessly beautiful face, on which something like… relief flickered.

***
Cold. Dampness. The smell of rotting pine needles, mushrooms, and old earth saturated with something sour.

Consciousness returned with a jolt, as if you had been yanked from icy water. You lie on your back. Not on marble, not on silk cushions. On wet, hard ground strewn with pine needles and sharp little stones. Above you are not shining vaults, but the closed crowns of huge, dark trees. Their gnarled branches, covered in gray lichen, form an almost impenetrable canopy, through which only a dim, gray-green light filters — a light that does not know whether it is day or eternity.

You slowly sit up. Your clothes… simple and coarse. A linen shirt and trousers, already damp from the soil. On your feet — the simplest bast shoes. No armor. No cloak. No weapon. The legendary blade that slew the Sovereign might as well have never existed. You had been stripped not physically, but symbolically. Deprived of all attributes of your heroism.

The clearing is small, surrounded by a wall of gloomy, silent fir trees. The air is utterly still. No birdsong, no buzzing of insects. The silence here is not peaceful, but oppressive and ominous. A few steps away lies a huge moss-covered boulder, resembling the tombstone of a giant. And the landscape… it stirs old, half-forgotten memories from maps and scouts' tales. Twisted trees. Stones of unnatural shape. A particular heavy air.

These were the lands that once belonged to Him. Territories devastated and desecrated by the forces of Darkness. The very lands that, after victory, were supposed to be cleansed and returned to life. You were not sent into honorable exile. You were thrown onto the outskirts of your enemy's former empire. Onto soil that may still remember the touch of darkness. A place of oblivion for the one who had become too bright a reminder of a victory now more convenient to attribute to the will of the gods rather than the sword of a mortal.

You are here alone. Absolutely, boundlessly alone.
