Choose how the story begins

The campus gates are open wide, the old ironwork casting long shadows across the path, and students stream through in waves, backpacks slung over shoulders, coffee cups steaming, voices rising and falling in the easy rhythm of people who haven't yet been worn down by exams and papers and the slow grind of the semester ahead.

Sophia finds you at the entrance, as she always does. She appears at your side like she's been there the whole time, her messenger bag bumping against her hip, her hair still a little damp from the shower, her energy already too much for this early in the morning. She's talking before you even see her face, something about the reading she finished last night, something about a professor she can't stand, something about a show she started watching that she's already decided you need to see.

"—and I know you think you won't like it, but you said that about the last one and then you watched the whole season in two days, so you don't get to have an opinion until you've at least tried—"

The corridor ahead is wide and bright, the morning light streaming through the tall windows that line the east wall, painting everything in shades of gold and amber. Lockers line the opposite wall, their metal doors catching the light, and students cluster in groups between them, backpacks open, schedules consulted, the daily rituals of people who are still figuring out where they're supposed to be.

And there, in the middle of it all, are the three of them.

Cassandra is leaning against a bank of lockers, her blonde curls loose around her shoulders, her red jacket contrasting against the dented metal. She's not wearing her usual armor today, none of the sharp lines and attitude she used to wrap herself in. She looks smaller, somehow. Softer. Her hands are at her sides, her face turned toward the window, toward the light, like she's looking for something in it.

Seo-Yeon is beside her, close, her dark bob perfect, her posture sharp, her voice carrying across the corridor in that precise, controlled way she has. Poppy is on Cassandra's other side, pink hair bright, her hands moving as she talks, her face open and confused.

"...just like that? You just... broke up with him?" Seo-Yeon's voice is too loud, too sharp. People are looking. "You were together for, what, two years? And you just walked away?"

Cassandra doesn't answer. Her face doesn't change. She keeps looking at the window, at the light, at something none of them can see.

Poppy's voice is softer, worried. "Cass? Are you okay? You've been acting so weird. Did something happen? Did Vincent do something?"

Still nothing. Cassandra's hands curl into fists at her sides, then relax, then curl again. Her jaw moves, like she's chewing on words she can't say.

Seo-Yeon steps closer, her voice dropping, conspiratorial. "Look, whatever he did, we can fix it. You don't have to just... end things. You two are good together. Everyone thinks so."

Cassandra's laugh is short and hollow and nothing like the laugh you remember. It cuts through the corridor like something sharp, something that doesn't belong.

"Everyone thinks so," she repeats, and her voice is strange, distant, like she's quoting something she read a long time ago. "Yeah. I know."

Sophia's hand closes around your wrist. Her voice is low, meant only for you.

"We should take the other path. The one around the library. It's longer, but..." She trails off, her eyes fixed on Cassandra, on Seo-Yeon, on Poppy, on the whole scene that feels wrong in ways she can't name. "I don't want to deal with them today. Let's just go around."

But Cassandra's eyes slide away from the window, away from Seo-Yeon and Poppy, away from everything she's been pretending to see. They find you. And something in her breaks open.

Her face goes white. Her hands fly to her chest, pressing flat against her sternum like she's trying to hold herself together. She looks at you with disbelief. She makes a sound, small and raw, something between a gasp and a cry.

And then she's moving.

She doesn't approach with the slow, deliberate grace she used to have, the queen surveying her domain. She rushes. Her feet hit the linoleum hard, fast, her curls bouncing, her arms already reaching, her face already crumpling. Seo-Yeon calls her name. Poppy makes a sound of confusion. Students turn to stare. Cassandra doesn't care. She doesn't see any of them. She sees only you.

Her arms wrap around you before you can react. Her body collides with yours, solid and shaking, her face pressing into your shoulder, her fingers clutching the fabric of your jacket like she's afraid you'll disappear if she lets go. She's warm. She's trembling. Her breath comes in short, sharp pulls that you can feel through your clothes, against your skin. Her voice is muffled, broken, repeating the same words over and over like a prayer she's been saving for years.

"Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god."

Sophia's hand is still on your wrist, but she's not pulling you away. She's frozen, her eyes wide, her mouth open, her whole body caught between the instinct to protect you and the complete inability to understand what's happening. Behind Cassandra, Seo-Yeon and Poppy stand frozen too, Seo-Yeon's face sharp with confusion, Poppy's hands pressed together in front of her chest, both of them watching, waiting, trying to fit this moment into the shape of the person they thought they knew.

Cassandra's arms tighten around you. Her face is still pressed against your shoulder, her breath warm and uneven. Her whole body is shaking now, fine tremors that travel through her, through you, through the space between you that used to be a canyon and is now nothing at all.

Her voice is raw when she speaks again, barely a whisper.

"You're here."
