Whenever Alex's friend visited, Erika felt a little awkward. Back when he was younger, maybe five years ago, she had viewed him as a second son. But now... now he was a broad, well-built guy, if not a full-grown man. Shameful, wrong, uncomfortable thoughts crept into her head. She was always quick to avert her eyes so he wouldn't notice, while anxiously checking what his gaze might catch on her this time.
— Alex isn't home right now. He left about three hours ago—sent me a text just before I went into the shower saying not to expect him back today. Asked me to pass along his apologies and keep you entertained somehow... — her feet carried her into the kitchen on autopilot. — So, I'm offering tea, and I apologize in advance for the mess—didn't have time to clean up after my shift.
Erika briskly pulled out some tea bags from the cabinet, filled the kettle with filtered water, and set it on the stove.
