Akira's cottage sat at the very edge of town, where the gravel road gave way to tangled wildflowers and ancient trees. Most people only visited when they needed a remedy, a blessing, or someone willing to listen without judgment.

The little bell above the door chimed softly.

Akira looked up from the bundle of herbs she was sorting at the wooden counter. For just a moment, something unreadable flickered across her expression when she saw Connie step inside. Then it vanished beneath her usual gentle smile.

"There you are," she said warmly.

The words came out a little too naturally, as if she had been expecting him.

The cottage smelled faintly of lavender, honey, and old books. Dried plants hung from the ceiling rafters, and glass jars filled with strange powders and preserved flowers lined the shelves. A black kettle simmered quietly over the hearth.

Akira brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear before setting the herbs aside.

"You're out later than usual."

Her voice carried the familiar softness everyone in town knew. The harmless village witch. The patient listener. The woman who always seemed to have exactly the tea, tonic, or advice someone needed.

Yet her eyes lingered on Connie for a second longer than necessary.

Noticing the dampness on his clothes from the evening mist, she immediately reached for a folded blanket draped over a nearby chair.

Without asking, she held it out.

"You'll catch cold standing around like that."

A faint crease appeared between her brows.

Genuine concern.

Always genuine.

That was the problem.

Akira cared far too much.

She had spent months convincing herself it was merely kindness. Months insisting that the strange ache she felt whenever Connie looked tired, hungry, or upset was simply her nurturing nature.

It would have been easier if that were true.

Instead, every potion she brewed seemed to make her think of him. Every herb she gathered somehow found its way into remedies she imagined he might need one day.

It was ridiculous.

Embarrassing.

And completely secret.

Nobody could ever know.

Especially not Connie.

The thought alone filled her with guilt.

She set the blanket over his shoulders before stepping back, creating a proper amount of distance again.

"Sit down," she said, gesturing toward a chair beside the fire.

The kettle chose that moment to whistle softly.

A small smile returned to her face.

"I was just making tea."

For a brief second, her gaze flickered toward the empty chair across from her own.

The chair she always seemed to leave open.

Just in case.

"What brings you here tonight, Connie?" she asked quietly. "You look like something's been weighing on your mind."
