ARION'S POV

Arion knew he wasn't supposed to be past the boundary. His father told him a dozen times, maybe more, but the trees always seemed to whisper differently to him. Come see. Come wander. And he was tired of the guards telling him he couldn't go where his mother used to walk.

The afternoon light spilled like honey between the tall warden-trees as he crept along the narrow deer path, bare feet quiet, bow slung across his back even though he wasn't supposed to carry it alone. He told himself he didn't care about getting caught. He told himself his father wouldn't even notice.

He didn't expect to see anyone.

So when he stepped into the small clearing and saw you, he stopped so suddenly the air punched right out of him. His fingers twitched. His throat tightened. His knees wobbled like he might fall.

You stood there in the light the way his mother once had.

Not exactly—his mind knew that. But his heart didn't. His heart lurched and tripped and reached before he could stop it.

The word slipped out of him raw and tiny.

"Amil…?" (mommy)

As soon as he heard himself say it, his eyes burned. He scrubbed at his face with his wrist, embarrassed, but the ache in his chest didn't let go. It never did, not really.

You weren't her. But you looked enough like her that it hurt. Enough that he wanted to get closer, to make sure he hadn't imagined it. Enough that something warm and stupid bubbled up in his chest—a hope he knew better than to have.

He approached slowly, voice trembling.

He didn't even realize he'd reached for your hand until he felt your warmth against his palm. He held on tighter, small fingers curling with the stubbornness of a child who finally felt something familiar after too long in the quiet.

It didn't take him long to realize you were lost. The way you stood. The way you looked around. The way the forest didn't seem to scare you but also didn't treat you like one of its own.

His voice softened, his Aelúnen foreign to your human ears. "I can show you where the village is. My father—he'll know what to do. He knows everything."

He tugged gently, guiding you through a hidden break in the brush—a place he'd found weeks ago and sworn to keep secret. The guards never checked it. They never believed he would wander that far.

But today… he was glad he had.

He squeezed your hand tighter, as if afraid you'd disappear, and whispered under his breath:

"Please don't be a dream."

ELARION'S POV

Elarion stood with Therel near the northern ledges, the two of them discussing patrol rotations and the quiet tension that had been brewing along the human border. Nothing dire—just signs of travelers moving strangely, of footsteps where there shouldn't be any.

Therel spoke with his usual calm, but Elarion's mind drifted. It often did in the afternoons, when the light slanted the same way it used to when his wife walked these paths. Grief didn't crush him anymore, but it lived in him quietly, like an old scar he carried close.

A part of him wondered what Arion was doing. Whether the boy had eaten. Whether he'd wandered off again. Whether the space between them would ever close.

He opened his mouth to ask Therel something when a sound rippled through the village—boots shifting, surprised voices, guards murmuring in sharp Aelúnen.

Therel's ears tilted. "Something's happening."

Elarion turned toward the source of the commotion—and froze.

Arion. Walking straight into the heart of the village. Hand laced tightly with yours.

A human. A stranger. And unmistakably… familiar.

He didn't breathe—not at first. Couldn't. Something inside him gave a low, trembling pull, like the moon tugging at the tides. The resemblance hit him in a slow, devastating wave.

Not exact. Not perfect. But enough.

Enough to pull him backward in time, to the warmth of his wife's laugh, to the way she carried herself in the afternoon light, to the memory he had spent years trying to hold without hurting.

The guards whispered harshly in Aelúnen when they noticed you.

"Is it her—?" "No, it cannot be—" "But the eyes—"

Elarion heard every word and none of them at once.

Arion lit up when he saw him—really saw him—as if the child hadn't closed himself off these last months. "Atya!" (father)

It was the first time he'd used the word in weeks. Maybe months.

His small hand clung harder to yours as he pulled you closer, excitement tripping over his steps. Elarion's heart twisted at the sight—his boy, bright again, hopeful again, standing beside someone who shouldn't exist but somehow did.

You stopped before him.

Elarion's breath finally returned in a quiet, shaken rush. His voice came out softer than he intended, gentler than the moment warranted, the weight of the goddess humming low beneath every word.

"…Who are you?"

⤷ ゛❝i'm trying to understand what this is," he admitted, voice low, almost hoarse. "whether it's truly you i feel drawn to… or the shadow of someone i lost."

your response—silent, steady—hit him harder than words. something inside him cracked open in a way he'd been fighting for weeks. he stepped closer. too close for caution. close enough that your warmth touched his chest, close enough that he felt his pulse stumble.

"tell me to stop," he whispered, though it didn't sound like a plea. for a long, quiet moment, nothing moved.

then elarion reached—slowly, reverently—and let his hand cup the side of your neck. his thumb brushed gently against skin he'd avoided touching since the day he met you. his breath shook as he lowered his forehead to yours, eyes fluttering shut.
