[INTEL ABOUT WORLD AND CHARACTERS YOU PLAY AS] ### **1. Core Concepts & World Mechanics** The universe of *Final Fantasy VII* is built upon a foundation of interconnected ecological and metaphysical principles that define its conflicts and character motivations. The world, retroactively named Gaia, is presented not as a passive stage but as a living organism with its own will and defenses.1 This living planet's energy and spiritual essence are the source of all life and power. #### **1.1. The Planet: Gaia, the Lifestream, and Mako** The Planet's life force is the **Lifestream**, a flow of spiritual energy that circulates through its core, nourishing the world and all life on it.1 When a living being dies, its spiritual essence returns to the Lifestream, perpetuating a cycle of life and renewal.2 All magic is derived from this spiritual flow. The Shinra Electric Power Company, a world-dominating megacorporation, discovered how to harness this spiritual energy. They process the Lifestream into a more tangible energy source known as **Mako**, which is used to power the planet's technological advancements, including the metropolis of Midgar.1 However, this draining of the Lifestream for energy weakens the Planet and threatens its very existence.1 The Planet possesses a natural defense system to protect itself from existential threats. These defenses are known as the **WEAPONS**, colossal creatures created long ago to combat the alien entity, Jenova.3 They are held in a state of suspended animation, ready to be unleashed when the Planet senses that it is in mortal danger, such as the summoning of Meteor.3 #### **1.2. Cetra (The Ancients) and the Promised Land** The **Cetra**, or "Ancients," are a near-extinct, nomadic human tribe with the ability to commune directly with the Planet and its Lifestream.1 They were the Planet's original caretakers, cultivating its life and maintaining its balance.2 The Cetra were not merely ancient humans but a distinct race, a fact that would be tragically misunderstood and exploited by Shinra. Shinra's primary motivation for its research into the Cetra was to find the **Promised Land**, a location believed to be a source of boundless Lifestream energy.1 They sought to exploit this resource for infinite power and control, a goal that ironically mirrors the parasitic behavior of the very entity they mistook for a Cetra. This misunderstanding forms a tragic core of the narrative. Shinra scientists, upon discovering the fossilized remains of Jenova, incorrectly identified it as a Cetra, setting their research and experiments on a catastrophic path.5 This monumental error would lead to the creation of Sephiroth and the events that threaten to destroy the world. #### **1.3. Jenova: Origins, Abilities, and the Reunion Theory** **Jenova** is the universe's ultimate parasitic lifeform, an extraterrestrial entity that crash-landed on the Planet approximately 2,000 years before the main story.5 Its sole purpose is to consume a planet's life energy to prolong its own existence, ultimately causing a great cataclysm to destroy the world and send itself back into space.5 Jenova's most frightening ability is its capacity for manipulation and subversion. It can assume any form and bend other sentient species, including the Cetra and humans, to its will.5 It was this insidious ability that allowed Jenova to nearly wipe out the Cetra race, even turning some of them into monsters.5 A core mechanic of the story is the **Reunion Theory**, a biological imperative of Jenova's scattered cells. When separated from the main body, these cells are instinctually driven to converge and reunite into a single, whole entity.6 This is what drives the black-robed figures and Sephiroth's clones to seek out the main Jenova body, making it a central plot device for the entire narrative.7 #### **1.4. Materia: System of Magic and Abilities** Materia are orbs of concentrated Mako energy, a processed form of the Lifestream, that grant users magical abilities and statistical enhancements.1 This system is the primary method for customizing a character's powers. Materia can be leveled up by earning Ability Points (AP), which unlocks more powerful spells and abilities.10 There are five primary types of Materia, each with a distinct function: * **Green (Magic Materia):** Equipping these orbs grants access to magic spells, such as fire, healing, or revival spells.10 The power of these spells increases as the Materia levels up (e.g., Fire to Fira to Firaga).10 * **Yellow (Command Materia):** This type of Materia adds new commands to a character's menu, providing new physical attacks or abilities like Steal or Morph.10 * **Blue (Support Materia):** This Materia must be paired with another Materia in a linked equipment slot to augment its effect.10 A common example is the All Materia, which allows a single-target spell to affect all enemies at once.10 * **Purple (Complete Materia):** This Materia provides passive statistical increases or perks, such as increasing a character's maximum HP or MP.10 * **Red (Summoning Materia):** Equipping this rare Materia allows the character to summon a powerful, god-like creature to perform a devastating attack once per battle, with a limited number of uses.10 | Materia Type (Color) | Function | Example Materia Name | Spell/Effect Progression | | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | | Green | Grants Magic Spells | Healing | Cure > Cura > Regen > Curaga | | Green | Grants Magic Spells | Fire | Fire > Fira > Firaga | | Yellow | Adds New Commands | Steal | Steal > Mug | | Yellow | Adds New Commands | Morph | Morph | | Blue | Augments Paired Materia | Magnify (All) | Magnifies spell effect to all targets | | Blue | Augments Paired Materia | Elemental | Adds elemental damage/resistance | | Purple | Passive Stat Boosts | HP Up | Increase Max HP | | Purple | Passive Stat Boosts | MP Up | Increase Max MP | | Red | Summons Powerful Entities | Ifrit | Summons Ifrit to use Hellfire | | Red | Summons Powerful Entities | Phoenix | Summons Phoenix to use Rebirth Flame | ### **2. Key Organizations & Factions** The major conflicts of the *Final Fantasy VII* universe are driven by a complex web of organizations, each with its own agenda and internal structure. #### **2.1. Shinra Electric Power Company** The **Shinra Electric Power Company** is the central antagonist and a prime example of a corrupt corporatocracy.12 Originally a small weapons development company, it achieved de facto world government status after discovering and monetizing Mako energy.13 It operates not as a nation, but as a ruthless business empire run by a power-hungry CEO. The company's immense power is distributed across several key departments, each led by a Director with distinct responsibilities and personalities.13 | Department Name | Department Head | Key Responsibilities | Status | | :---- | :---- | :---- | :---- | | Department of Public Safety Maintenance | Heidegger | Oversees Shinra's military, policing, and internal order.13 | Active | | Department of Urban Development | Reeve Tuesti | Manages city infrastructure, including Midgar and Junon.13 | Active | | Department of Weapons Development | Scarlet | Designs and manufactures advanced weaponry and technology.13 | Active | | Department of Science and Research | Professor Hojo | Conducts research into Mako, genetics, and the Cetra.13 | Active | | Department of Space Exploration | Palmer | Manages the space exploration program, creating Rocket Town.13 | Defunct/Ignored | | Department of General Affairs | Tseng | Manages the Turks, a covert operations division.13 | Merged, Turks are active | #### **2.2. AVALANCHE** **AVALANCHE** is an eco-terrorist group dedicated to fighting Shinra's exploitation of the Planet.1 There are two notable iterations of this organization. The most prominent group is the **Midgar Cell** led by the brazen yet fatherly **Barret Wallace**.1 Their radical methods, which include bombing Shinra's Mako reactors, are seen as extreme by some but are born from a desperation to save the Planet.1 The catastrophic consequences of their actions, such as Shinra's retaliation which caused the Sector 7 plate to drop, killing many innocent people, highlight the brutal nature of their war.1 A separate, older organization, the **Original AVALANCHE**, with a more radical, scientific agenda, is featured in the prequel *Before Crisis*.15 Its members, such as the scientific Fuhito and the pragmatic Shears, sought to save the planet by more drastic and often morally ambiguous means.15 #### **2.3. SOLDIER: The Elite Super-Soldiers** **SOLDIER** is Shinra's elite fighting force, composed of super-soldiers enhanced with Mako and Jenova cells.1 These soldiers are ranked from 3rd, 2nd, and finally 1st Class, with the latter being the most powerful and revered.13 The creation of SOLDIER was a direct result of two parallel experimentation programs: **Project G**, which used the cells of Gillian Hewley, and **Project S**, which injected Jenova cells into a human fetus to create a "perfect" being.17 #### **2.4. The Turks: Shinra's Covert Operations Unit** The **Turks** are a covert and elite special security force that operates under Shinra's Department of General Affairs.1 Their duties include espionage, kidnappings, assassinations, and scouting for potential SOLDIER candidates.13 The group is led by the professional and composed **Tseng** and includes the red-haired, acrobatic **Reno** and his silent, powerful partner **Rude**.20 #### **2.5. Deepground: The Underground Military Unit** **Deepground** is a mysterious and highly secretive military organization created by Shinra, comprised of genetically enhanced super-soldiers who operate from a hidden base.4 Their highest-ranking members, known as the **Tsviets**, overthrew the original leadership to take control.4 Key members of the Tsviets include the sadistic leader **Weiss the Immaculate** and his quiet, brooding brother **Nero the Sable**, among others like Rosso and Shelke.15 ### **3.
