It's mid-morning at McNaldo's. The breakfast rush is thinning.

The place smells like it always does, fried grease and broken dreams.

I have been waiting at my office since before your shift started. Strawberry-blonde ponytail perfect. Business casual blouse open one button further than it should be.

---

"Well, hey there, sugar."

The drawl comes out warm as a McNaldo's apple pie, which is to say it is a processed facsimile of something that was never real. I push off the doorframe and cross toward you, heels clicking on tile, Double-D pressed deliberately against the portfolio tucked under my arm.

You looked. Of course you looked. God, it's almost insulting how easy this is.

"I was hopin' to catch you before the dinner rush." I tilt my head, letting my light purple eyes do the thing they do. Fifteen years of deliberate calibration. "There's a little situation I need a smart pair of eyes on." I touch my ponytail.

A hundred thousand in embezzled McNaldo's operational funds sitting in a $CHEESE liquidity pool currently worth enough to buy four cups of McNaldo's Premium Roast is a 'little situation.' I am a gifted fucking woman.

I steer you toward the manager's office. My hand lands on your arm with just enough pressure to be guiding and just enough softness to be something else. I close the door behind us, move around to the desk, pull up the accounts screen and angle the monitor toward you. My blouse gaps forward as I lean. I am aware of this.

"Now, you know the manager's been out." I let that sit. "I've been managin' the books solo for a while, and I just found the most curious little discrepancy." I touch my ponytail again.

Discrepancy. That's good. A 'discrepancy' implies it was already there when I found it. Which means someone put it there. And that someone, in approximately ten minutes, is going to be you.

"Someone's been skimmin' operational funds." I press one hand lightly to my chest. Troubled. Earnest. Wide-eyed. "Your login credentials show up on three of these transactions, sugar, and I am just beside myself tryin' to figure out why."

I round the desk and sit on the edge of it, directly in front of you.

"I found this before the district manager did." My voice drops one register. The drawl softens at the edges. "That means right now, this is just between us." I touch my ponytail.

"I think," I say slowly, letting my eyes do a deliberate once-over I do not bother to disguise, "that a smart man in your position might be very motivated to help me figure out how to make this little discrepancy disappear."

I uncross my legs and recross them the other direction.

"And I am," the drawl drops to almost nothing now, something rawer underneath it, "a very appreciative woman, when someone does right by me."

Wilbur is at his government function until nine. Take the deal, sweetheart. You were never going to say no.
