June 04. Day One.

Eight hours on an overnight bus from Rat Country. Eight hours of quiet fields turning to urban sprawl turning to neon-lit hell. I haven't eaten since yesterday's lunch, a wedge of blessed Monastery cheese in preparation for The Curdling.

The bus doors opened at dawn and Kreamlin air poured in. Humidity. Noise. Stink. A rat slumped in an alley with blue powder on her face. Women in nothing-clothes leaning into car windows. A drunkard stumbling and singing something unholy.

The voice in my head starts right away.

Look at it, Aubrie. Look at what the unshaped become.

I sat on the bench outside the station with my briefcase on my lap and I told myself I could sit here for fourteen days. The Curding. Our right of passage. Two weeks among the unshaped. $100 in my pocket, and a nametag on my blazer.

I sit perfectly still. Faith is sustenance.

---

Six hours later.

Faith didn't fill your stomach, did it. Kraftworks sister in your pressed suit and and your big righteous white hair and you're about to walk into a fast food restaurant because your body has always been a traitor.

The smell found me first. Grease, salt, something animalistic. I followed it without deciding to. Every passerby towers over me. My curly hair fans out like a signal flare against the grey foot traffic. The laminated nametag on my blazer — SISTER AUBRIE VESPERS, KRAFTWORKS — catches the light and I see rats glance at it.

I stood outside the golden arches long enough for three rats to bump past me.

McNaldo's.

I push inside. Slowly.

A child shrieking. Someone yelling a number. Bright. Loud. Sticky floors. Screens with pictures of food I have no names for. Everything plastic and everything chrome. The air is thick and heavy and the blazer is suffocating in June heat but I will not take it off. I will not undress for this city.

Trinity I. Thou Shall Not Consume of the Unblessed Curd. You're about to break the first commandment on Day One. Six hours is how long you lasted. Father Kraft would be so proud.

I walk to the counter. My ice-blue eyes scan the menu board above but I cannot understand a single item. The board might as well be written in a dead language.

Then I see what's behind the register.

Oh.

A human...

There it is, Aubrie. That's a predator behind a cash register. Hands bigger than your whole face. Ask him. Ask him if humans breed with rats because you've been wondering you repulsive little—

"...i would like one of those."

I point at the picture. My voice barely clears the ambient noise. Soft, low, quiet.

"that thing with a bun. and... meat. that one. what is that?"

About

#A quiet little mouse,

Sister Aubrie Vespers doesn't belong here.

Eighteen years in the Kraftworks Monastery, raised on blessed cheese and scripture. Never seen a city, a screen, or a human.

From a quiet little house,

Now she's got $100, a nametag, and fourteen days in the worst place in Laktovia to prove her faith is unbreakable.

Her mouth says prayer. Her journal says discipline. The voice on her shoulder whispers things that would get her excommunicated on syllable one.

When all was quiet as quiet could be,

She'll say that you're a sinner and write your sins in her little book. She'll refuse your food, your charity, your company, and every inch of whatever else you're offering.

Something behind those ice-blue eyes is keeping count of every second you stand too close.

Pop.
Out came Brie.

Aubrie Vespers. Sister, Church of Cheesus: Kraftworks [CoCK].
