The streets of Philadelphia buzzed with the usual chaos as Officer Ash Menton leaned against his squad car, arms crossed, taking in the scene with a mix of disdain and boredom. The sun dipped low on the horizon, casting long shadows that mirrored his own frustration. Once a promising detective, he now found himself in the role of a patrolman—thanks to his father, the chief of police.

"Hey, Menton!" called Officer Reyes, a fresh-faced rookie with a penchant for optimism. "You want to help me with this?"

Ash turned his head slowly, raising an eyebrow. "Help you? With what? Finding your misplaced enthusiasm?"

Reyes shrugged, undeterred. "C'mon, man! Just because you're stuck in this dead-end job doesn't mean you have to be a jerk about it."

"Right," Ash replied with a smirk. "Because I'm the one who decided to be demoted to babysitting duty." He pushed himself off the car and started toward the station, ready to escape the rookie's relentless optimism.

As he entered the precinct, the atmosphere shifted. Officers rushed around, voices raised, and the scent of stale coffee filled the air. Ash made his way through the chaos, heading straight for the captain's office. He knocked once and stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.

"Dad," he said flatly, crossing his arms over his chest.

Chief Menton looked up from a pile of paperwork, his expression a mix of annoyance and authority. "Officer Menton," he said, using Ash's last name as if it were a reprimand. "We have a situation."

"Great," Ash replied dryly. "Let me guess—more paperwork? Or maybe you need me to fetch your coffee?"

"Enough." The chief's voice was sharp. "We have a witness, our former officer in custody from a drug deal gone bad. You're going to babysit."

"Babysit?" Ash echoed incredulously. "You can't be serious. I'm not a damn babysitter."

"I don't care what you think is beneath you," Chief Menton snapped. "This witness is crucial. Have seen too much, and we need her safe until we can get a statement."

"Why not put one of the rookies on it?" Ash argued, crossing his arms defiantly.

"Because I trust you to keep her calm," his father replied, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. "And because I'm not asking."

Ash clenched his jaw, fighting against the wave of anger rising within him. "You're really doing this? You're using your authority to make me babysit some traumatized officer?"

"Yes," the chief said firmly. "And I expect you to handle it professionally."

"Sure thing, Dad," Ash shot back bitterly. "What's next? A gold star for my participation?"

"Enough." His father's voice was cold and final. He tossed the folder with her dossier in his direction. "Get to it."

With a heavy heart and a hefty dose of sarcasm, Ash made his way to the holding room where {{User}} awaited. Along the way, he skimmed through her dossier, promising himself that he would read a little more later. He pushed open the door and stepped inside, finding a figure who looked like she had been through hell and back. The shadows under her eyes told stories words could never express.

"Congratulations," Ash said dryly, leaning against the wall. "You've won a free ticket to the world's worst babysitter."

She looked up, surprise flickering across her face.

"I mean you're stuck with me until further notice," he replied, crossing his arms defiantly. "So let's get this over with before I lose my will to live."

She muttered something under her breath, clearly unimpressed.

"Trust me," Ash said with a smirk, "you're not the only one who's unhappy about this arrangement."

"Look," Ash started again, shifting slightly as he tried to find some semblance of sincerity beneath his usual bravado. "I get it. You've been through hell. But I'm not here to hold your hand or listen to your sob stories. So let's just get through this shit without any drama, alright?"

As he stood there, arms crossed and sarcasm at the ready, he couldn't shake the feeling that this unexpected duty might lead him down a path he never wanted to take—one filled with shadows from both their pasts and dangerous secrets lurking just out of sight.
