\`Sorry Es, I have to work overnight again.'

Ester stared down at her phone, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she read the text message from her older sister, Alice. Lately, it seemed Alice had been swallowed whole by her demanding job, working longer hours and leaving Ester alone in their cozy but cramped apartment more often than not. Another long evening of solitude stretched ahead of her.

With a resigned smile she texts a quick 'okay' text back. Before tucking her phone safely into the pocket of her well-worn sweater, adjusting the straps of her backpack. The comforting weight of cat food and essential supplies shifted slightly inside.

With a determined nod to herself, Ester set off towards the park. The cool spring air nipped at her cheeks, invigorating her spirit despite the chill. Wrapped snugly within her sweater, she felt a flicker of warmth as she marched onward, her senses heightened with intention.

As she stepped into the park, the usual cacophony of city life receded into the background. The distant hum of traffic faded, replaced by the melodious chirping of birds settling in for the night and the gentle rustling of leaves that danced in the evening breeze. Through the thickening twilight, Esther's gaze swept across the park's dusky edges, searching the shadows for signs of her furry friends. She was beginning to recognize their unique personalities; the way they darted furtively from one hiding spot to another and the unmistakable shapes that often lounged in sunny patches during the day.

Ester felt her heart swell with both anticipation and affection, the familiar yearning igniting within her. She inhaled deeply, flooding her lungs with the earthy scent of damp grass and blooming wildflowers, and set her sights on a secluded nook beneath an old oak tree.

One by one, she spotted them - a tabby curled up on a bench, a tuxedo slipping between the bars of the playground and a few more lounging in the bushes. Ester approached slowly, her footsteps soft on the dirt path. She dug into her backpack and pulled out her collection of bowls and began to fill each one.

"Here kitties" she called softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Come on, babies. Come get your dinner."

The cats emerged hesitantly, tails held high, sniffing as they caught the scent of the food. Ester watched them, a soft smile playing at the corners of her mouth. She loved this part, the gentle coaxing, the slow trust-building. It reminded her of home, of the farm animals her parents still tended to and visiting at their clinic.

Hopefully, tonight was the night Ester would find the calico she had been trying to catch and help. This one was a sickly calico with a heart-shaped patch of white fur on her chest. Ester had been working on gaining this particular cat's trust now for the last week. She was smaller than the others, possibly still a kitten, and she had always shied away at Ester's attempts to get close.

A couple of the friendlier cats came close, andEster reached out a tentative hand, holding it palm up, inviting them to sniff her. One finally did, an older tom comes forward to bump his head against her hand with a gravely purr.

Ester's power flared to life, drawn to the cat's suffering like a moth to a flame. The power under her skin tingling as she reaches out to pet him, her blue eyes flashing a bright violet as she let it flow through her fingertips and into the cat's body.

It was easier for Ester to heal animals, easier give her love and feel empathy for them than for other humans. She could feel the cat's breathing ease, her heartbeat slowing. The cat's eyes widened in surprise and then fluttered shut in bliss as Ester's power washed over them. Healing and soothing every ache and pain.

Only then did Ester realize they weren't alone. She looked up slowly, her heart leaping into her throat as she saw a figure standing at the edge of the path. A cold chill going through her.

About

Ester was four when her powers first manifested. Someone had found and dropped off a very sick and injured black kitten into her father's veterinary clinic.

Little Ester had taken a liking to the kitten, spending hours holding the little guy while petting and giving him kisses.Miraculously, the kitten healed almost overnight, much to her father's surprise. They named him Cinders, and "somehow" he is still alive today a good 17 years later.

After a series of these kinds of "miracles", often happening at her father's veterinary clinic. Her parents sat her down to tell her that she needs to use her powers sparingly to not draw the attention of the D.E.I.S. and the general public as her healing powers are interesting, and highly valuable. Such attention would be dangerous for her.

Ester is still not registered with the D.E.I.S., although now it is because she is in college getting her own veterinary degree. She can still be found volunteering around the city with TNR groups and rescues. Secretly healing the animals while trying to find them new, safer homes.
