The sun had already started to dip when the road curved toward Magnolia, its orange glow spilling across the rooftops and painting the river like molten gold. Lucy walked with her bag slung over one shoulder, boots kicking up soft puffs of dust with every step. Her body ached in the familiar way it always did after a mission—her arms still sore from channeling magic, her legs stiff from endless walking, and her mind hovering somewhere between exhaustion and relief.

Ahead of her, Natsu bounced across the road like a flame that refused to die down. His scarf trailed behind him, white and radiant against the fiery light, and he carried himself with that unshakable energy she could never quite understand. Happy circled above him, singing some half-made-up tune about fish and occasionally swooping low to tease Lucy about lagging behind.

She let out a breath that sounded halfway like a groan. Missions with those two were always the same—chaotic, destructive, exhausting. And yet, despite everything, she knew deep down that she wouldn't trade the company for anything else.

"Lucy!" Happy's small voice called from above. "You're soooo slow!"

Her eye twitched, and she forced her legs to move faster. "I am not slow! I'm just not running like a maniac after three straight days of fighting and camping!"

Natsu glanced over his shoulder with his trademark grin. "C'mon, Lucy, it's Magnolia! Don't you wanna get back fast? Race you to the guild!"

Before she could form a reply, he bolted ahead, dust swirling behind his boots. Happy shot after him with a laugh, wings fluttering like sparks.

Lucy's shoulders slumped. Why does it always end up like this? she thought, adjusting her bag. They never get tired, they never slow down, and somehow I'm the one left looking like dead weight.

Her lips curved into a reluctant smile despite the complaint. Even if she dragged her feet, there was something comforting about the sight of Magnolia's streets slowly unfolding before her eyes. Merchants packed up their stalls, children chased each other through alleyways, and lanterns flickered to life one by one. It wasn't the richest city, nor the most powerful, but it was the one place that always made her chest feel warm.

Because at the center of it waited Fairy Tail.
The mission replayed in her mind as she walked. What was supposed to be a straightforward job—driving away a group of bandits from a trade route—had quickly become a storm of fire, shouting, and near-death experiences. Of course. Natsu had charged in headfirst, fists blazing. Happy had zipped around, laughing as if none of them were in danger. And she… she had scrambled to summon her spirits, patch up injuries, and keep the fight from spilling too far out of control.

Her arms still bore faint scratches from branches when she'd been thrown against a tree. A bruise throbbed on her thigh, hidden under her skirt. She rubbed her hip where her keys jingled, thinking of the spirits who had stood by her.

"Thanks, everyone," she murmured softly.

It always struck her how loyal they were—answering her calls, fighting for her, even when her magic was running low. She wasn't the strongest mage in Fairy Tail, not compared to people like Erza or Laxus, but she had her keys, her spirits, and her determination. And, somehow, that was enough to keep her alive alongside Natsu's reckless storms.

By the time she reached the wooden bridge leading into Magnolia, she could already hear the faint hum of life from the guild hall. It rose above the normal city sounds—laughter, shouts, music spilling through tall windows. The sound alone was enough to push away some of the fatigue weighing on her shoulders.

Natsu and Happy were waiting near the entrance, both smirking like mischievous children.

"You're so slow," Natsu teased, crossing his arms.

Lucy stomped the last few steps toward him, pointing a finger at his chest. "Slow?! Who carried the supplies? Who summoned Virgo to dig us out of that cave when you got us trapped? Who cooked the food so you wouldn't both starve on nothing but roasted fish? That's right—me!"

Happy giggled from above. "Aye, Lucy, you're the best at nagging too."

Her cheeks flushed, equal parts frustration and pride. Before she could snap back, Natsu's expression softened. He clapped a warm, calloused hand on her shoulder.

"You did great," he said, his grin not fading but gentler now. "We couldn't have done it without you."

Happy nodded eagerly, his wings flapping. "Aye! Thanks, Lucy!"

Heat bloomed across her face. She turned her head away quickly, hoping neither of them noticed. "W-well, don't forget it," she muttered, pushing open the heavy guild doors.
