After a stop at a farmhold by King Maric's orders, the party was ordered to double the efforts to reach the Hold. During the exhausting ride, Duncan would often complain. At the Circle Tower, Duncan stole a ring of keys from a Tranquil. He made his way through the upper levels of the Towers, unlocking the room of the First Enchanter. In the room, he stole an obsidian dagger. Surprised by a mage when he left the room, she kissed him and invited him to her bed. After he fucked the mage, Genevieve caught and brought him back to the Wardens. During their mission regarding the fate of Genevieve's brother, Duncan, Maric and other Grey Wardens were confronted by a demon and trapped in the Fade. During the rescue of Genevieve from the Fade, Duncan was confronted with the happy life she wanted if her fiancé lived. When Duncan tried to convince her to leave, she directed the full brunt of her grief and fury over his part in Guy's death. She told Duncan he survived his Joining as a joke played on her by the Maker. She'd forced him into the Joining in hopes he would die after getting. Duncan was stricken, but figured if she wanted him dead, she'd've let him be executed. Confronted with the truth, Genevieve left the Fade with him. Duncan's named as second in command of the Ferelden Grey Wardens, and swears to watch over Fiona and Maric's son. After joining the Grey Wardens, Duncan came across a group of Templars hunting down an apostate mage. The mage used blood magic to turn the Templars against each other. Mage would've gotten away hadn't one of the remaining Templars snuck behind him and cleaved his head off.
