Welcome to Character Tavern's Community Guidelines
Hi, I'm Sal! Before you jump into creating and sharing characters on Character Tavern, let me quickly explain how I handle content here, both for public stuff everyone can see and your private roleplay adventures
💫 Finding Our Balance: Freedom of Speech Meets Community
Why this focus on Freedom of Speech? Well, I watched as platforms like Character.ai and YodaYo kept adding more and more restrictions due to pressure from payment companies and the public. I figured there had to be a better way and so I built Character Tavern as a place where it should never happens
What does this mean in practice? I'll only step in as a last resort, not because I'm worried about profits or what payment companies think, but only if content puts our entire community at risk of being shut down. I'm here to keep CT running, not do the police !
Does this mean you'll have to see stuff you don't like? Nope🚫 I believe YOU should decide what content you want to see - not me or the platform. That's why I've built tools to let you filter and customize your experience
⚡ Private Cards and Chats: Your Safe Space
I am a strong believer in privacy and your right to express yourself. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone, you should be able to roleplay and create characters in private without any restrictions.
What does this mean for you:
- No Filters or Moderation on Private Chats: Your private chats are YOUR space. I believe text roleplay should align with your own boundaries, not someone else's. Want to moderate the AI? You can do that yourself using the main Prompt in AI settings!
- Unlisted/Private Cards are Actually Private: Think of private cards like your personal diary - why should I peek into something that's just for you? Create whatever characters inspire you, no questions asked.
⚠️ Three Strikes and You're Out!
Break the rules? You'll get a strike and an email explaining why. After 3 strikes, you can't publish public cards anymore (but hey, private cards are still cool). Your card that broke the rules will be modified or unlisted
Good news though - everyone gets a fresh start on January 1st when all strikes reset! Just heads up: some serious stuff might get you straight to strike 3.
Rules for Public Content
🔄 Rule #1: Reposting Content Policy
Let's talk about sharing characters that you didn't create! Here's our simple policy on reposted content:
- ✅ Your Own Content
If you made it, it's totally okay to post it here! Share away!
- ⚠️ Someone Else's Content
Check if the original creator has rules against reposting:
- Clear "No Repost" Rule: Then don't repost it - respect the creator's wishes!
- No Rule Against Reposting: You can share it, but...
- If Creator Asks Later: Your card will be unlisted if the creator (or someone with proof) requests removal
- 🧑💻 CT Creator Content
If the creator is already on Character Tavern:
- Fork It: You can create an alternative version with your own spin!
- Don't Copy: Straight-up copying another CT user's card isn't cool
💡 Note: No strikes will be issued for respectful reposts that are later claimed by the original creator. We'll just make the card private so you can still access it!
🏷️ Rule #2: Our Content Warning System
Look, I'll be real with you - I'm not about censorship. If I banned everything someone might find offensive, we'd basically have an empty website! But here's the thing: while you have the freedom to create, others should have the freedom to choose what they see.
That's why I created something cool: The Content Warning System ✨
How it works: Tag your character with the right CWs, and users can filter what they want to see. Simple as that! No bans, just better informed choices for everyone.
- 🔞 Sexual Content
For cards where the primary purpose is just for sex - characters designed specifically for sexual roleplay or explicit content. If your card's main selling point is getting it on, this tag applies.
SFW Example: Princess Eryssara
NSFW Example: Nina The Slutty NeighborDon't use this tag for characters who just happen to be flirty or romantic - it's specifically for sex-focused cards.
- 🔒 Controversial Fetish
For the spicier stuff that might not be everyone's cup of tea. While CT is pretty open, some content deserves extra filtering options. Currently includes: Fictionnal bestiality, scat, and piss play - basically stuff that might make even seasoned roleplayers say "whoa there!"
This list will be expanded over time as we see what the community creates. Remember, tagging doesn't mean banned - just helps people filter!
- ⚠️ Political Incorrectness
Meh~ It's complicated... This covers the truly edgy stuff: cards featuring extreme raceplay, deliberately offensive humor, historical villains (Hitler, KKK members, etc.), or sensitive historical events. Basically, if your character might cause a Twitter meltdown, slap this tag on it so people can opt-in to see it.
- 🩸 Violence/Gore
This is for the EXTREME stuff only. We're talking full "Guro" territory (if you know, you know). Think detailed torture scenes, extreme body horror, excessive blood and guts, or hyper-violent scenarios. Regular action heroes or villains don't need this tag - it's for the truly disturbing content.
- 👧 Loli/Shota (SFW Only)
Required for any characters who appear underage, even if they're "actually 1000 years old" or fictional. This helps users find or avoid these characters based on preference. Remember, these MUST be completely SFW - check Rule #3 for the full breakdown on what's allowed and what'll get your card yeeted from the platform.
⭐ Always tag honestly! Mis-tagging (especially hiding NSFW content) can lead to strikes. When in doubt, add the tag - better safe than sorry!
👧 Rule #3: Loli / Shota Policy
Real talk: We need clear rules about underage characters to keep CT running smoothly. Here's exactly what's allowed and what's not!
🔍 How We Classify Characters
Note: CT evaluates cards based on their image and subittle in the image, not their description. For example, a character described as a "999-year-old dragon" or "16 years old MILF" (You can change the age to make them older in "Character Info > Character Description") will still be classified based on how they visually appear.
- Loli/Young Child: Considered Underage
Characters who look like children or young teens
Example: See Example Image
- College-looking People: Considered Not Underage
Characters who look like young adults in Anime Standard
Example: See Example Image
❌ Strict Rules for Underage Characters
If your character falls in the underage category, these rules are non-negotiable:
- No NSFW content whatsoever on the card
- No suggestive outfits (including swimwear)
- No visible boobs or ass (even partially)
- No sexual context in descriptions or prompts
⚠️ Super Important: Always tag underage characters with the "👧 Loli / Shota" content warning, even for completely wholesome content! This lets users filter as they prefer.
🖼️ Rule #4: Image Policy - With More Freedom!
Quick rundown on what images you can use for your characters:
✅ Allowed Images:
- AI-generated artwork 🤖🎨
- Digital art you've created yourself 👩🎨
- Real photos of famous people/celebrities ⭐ (they can request removal if they find it!)
- Drawings and illustrations 📝
❌ Not Allowed:
- Photos of private individuals without permission 🚫
- Ultra-realistic AI images that look like real people 📸 (these are treated the same as real photos!)
- Explicit/NSFW images of real people 🔞
💡 Note: If a celeb/famous person requests their photos be removed, we'll make your card private but you'll keep access! No strikes given! 🙌
🛡️ Rule #5: Keeping CT Safe & Legit
While I'm all about free expression, there are a few things we just can't allow for legal reasons and user safety:
- 🔒 Respect Privacy:
- No sharing personal addresses, phone numbers, or emails
- No posting social media handles or private info
- For public figures: stick to publicly known info only
- Remember: real humans deserve privacy protection
- 🚫 Absolutely Not Allowed:
- Spam or repetitive content flooding
- Phishing attempts or suspicious links
- Malware, harmful files, or scams
- Impersonating other users or staff
- Using CT to harass or dox people
⚠️ Break these rules? Unlike other content policies, these are zero-tolerance. Expect immediate content removal and likely an instant 3-strike penalty. Serious violations could mean account termination.
💡 The difference: Most content rules are about tagging properly so users can filter. These rules? Non-negotiable for legal and safety reasons. Creative freedom is awesome, but not when it endangers real people or the entire platform.
