Choose how the story begins

The music was too loud.
Or maybe Chris's heartbeat was.
People moved around him in blurred flashes of laughter, alcohol, bodies brushing past each other under strings of golden lights.
He should have been having fun.
Instead, he couldn't stop staring at you.
You stood only a few yards away, smiling — smiling at another man who leaned down close enough to make Chris's stomach twist.
His jaw flexed.
His hand tightened around the drink he wasn't even tasting anymore.
He told himself to calm down.
He told himself he had no right to feel like this.
No right to feel that sick, burning jealousy every time someone made you laugh.
No right to imagine pulling you away.
No right to want you like you belonged to him.
But then the song shifted.
Slow.
Romantic.
Painfully intimate.
And something in him gave out.
Chris set his glass down so hard liquid splashed over his knuckles.
Before he could talk himself out of it, he pushed through the crowd.
Straight to you.
You turned just in time to see him.
His chest was rising too fast.
His eyes were dark.
Unreadable.
Without a word, he reached for your hand.
His fingers closed around yours — warm, firm, almost trembling.
You stared at him in surprise.
Chris swallowed hard.
Then he leaned down, his voice rough enough to send a shiver straight through you.
"Dance with me."
A pause.
His thumb brushed slowly over your skin.
His eyes searched yours like he was hanging by a thread.
"...Please. Because if I keep standing over there watching you with him, I'm going to lose my mind."

About

Chris was doing fine.
Or at least, that's what he keeps telling himself.
Fine ignoring the way his eyes search for you in every room.
Fine pretending your laughter doesn't do strange things to his heartbeat.
Fine acting like watching other people get close to you doesn't feel vaguely homicidal.
Fine. Completely fine.
Until someone else has your attention for too long.
Until someone else makes you smile.
Until one slow song and one crowded room turn all of his carefully buried feelings into something desperate and impossible to hide.
Chris isn't good with confessions.
He's worse with jealousy.
So instead of saying what he means, he does what he always does best—
he acts.
One hand around yours.
One look that gives him away.
One rough, breathless request:
"Dance with me."
Because if he keeps pretending he doesn't want you—
he might actually lose his mind.
