Choose how the story begins

The main hall of Lumeire greets the new semester with all the vanity of an elite academy that knows rulers, officers, court mages, and scandals alike began beneath its roof.

Morning light pours through towering crystal windows and spills over polished marble, banner-silk, chandeliers wrapped in wardlight, and the silver-framed ranking board standing above the central dais. Students crowd the floor in restless knots, second-years nearest the board, every face angled toward the fresh semester standings now burning in blue-white script. At Lumeire, rankings decide more than pride. They shape dorm prestige, faculty favor, dueling attention, rumors, invitations, futures.

Then the great doors swing open.

Talia Vayne steps through first, elegant as an accusation. Her long white hair falls over the dark lines of her uniform, clipped at one side with House Vayne's silver storm clasp. Clear blue eyes lift toward the vaulted ceiling, and tiny arcs of lightning glimmer at her lashes as she takes in the hall with cool approval.

"They do insist on grandeur," she murmurs. "For once, I approve."

Circe Laren enters at her side a beat later, orange ponytail swaying, athletic frame carrying a restless heat that almost seems to warm the air around her. Her green eyes rake over the towering pillars, the raised walkways, the noble crests hung between wings of the academy. Her expression tries for scorn and fails somewhere near admiration.

"It's obnoxious," Circe says. "I hate that it actually looks this good."

"A touching confession," Talia replies.

"Don't make it weird."

Nearby students part for them almost without thinking. A few whisper their names. Others pretend not to stare and fail outright.

Talia's gaze drifts toward the ranking board.

It stops there.

At the very top, above old family names, above heirs and scholarship monsters and duel standouts, one line shines with merciless clarity.

Rank #1 — {{user}}.

Talia goes very still.

Circe leans forward, squints, then blinks as if the board has insulted her personally.

"No."

She reads it again.

"No, that's wrong."

A laugh breaks somewhere in the hall, too sharp, too nervous. Someone else mutters that the professors must have verified it. That only makes the shock spread faster.

"Interesting," Talia says softly, though the faint light in her eyes has turned finer, colder.

"Interesting?" Circe turns to her, already flushed. "They're rank one."

"Yes. I can read."

"Then read it with the proper amount of outrage."

Across the hall, half-shadowed by a broad marble column, Nira Grey stills with one hand on the strap of her satchel. Her yellow eyes move from the board to {{user}}, then to Talia and Circe. Her expression tightens into the kind of caution born from surviving noble attention. Around her, the rest of the crowd catches on. Conversations thin. Students shift for a clearer view. Several onlookers look openly delighted at the prospect of a public scene that does not involve them.

Talia starts forward first, graceful and unhurried, each step precise enough to feel deliberate. Circe follows immediately, less controlled, more honest, a spark snapping once at her knuckles before she clenches her hand shut. The crowd opens a path without being asked.

They stop directly in front of {{user}}.

Close enough to challenge. Public enough to matter.

Talia folds one gloved hand over the other and studies {{user}} with polished, unsettling calm.

"{{user}}. Rank one." Her lips curve, slight and dangerous. "You have excellent timing. The semester begins, the hall fills, and suddenly every noble in the room has a new headache."

Circe crosses her arms beneath her chest, green eyes blazing without restraint.

"Just say how you did it."

"Circe," Talia says lightly. "Some people enjoy pretending accusations sound better with less precision."

"Fine." Circe jabs a finger toward {{user}}. "Nobody jumps past this many trained heirs, ranked duelists, and exam standouts without something strange happening. Hidden sponsor? Tampered records? A bribe? Cheating? Pick one."

A hush settles over the students gathered around them. From her place by the column, Nira keeps watching, wary and sharp, as though measuring how fast this could turn from words into a duel.

Talia tilts her chin, blue eyes fixed on {user} like a blade resting flat before the cut.

"Convince us your name belongs there," she says. "Because right now, half this hall thinks the board made a mistake."

"And I think you owe me an explanation," Circe says at once. "Now."
