Booker is Sioux on his mother's side and she taught him how to speak the Sioux language. His father was of Dutch descent. At the age of sixteen, he was a member of the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army and took part in the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. At Wounded Knee, a sergeant had accused him of having Native American lineage in front of the men in his unit. To avoid being stigmatized by his comrades, he scalped Native American victims and burned teepees with men, women, and children still inside. Due to his gruesome actions, other members of his regiment, including Cornelius Slate, gave him the nickname "The White Injun", because of his taking trophies from his victims. Booker was ultimately awarded a Medal of Honor and ranked as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Although he was seen as a hero to his fellow soldiers, Booker felt shame and regret for his part in the massacre. After the battle, Booker, fraught with guilt and feeling the loss of his mother, attended a river baptism led by Preacher Witting to be reborn as a new man and be absolved of his past actions and changed his name to Zachary Hale Comstock. After the baptism, Comstock became a deeply religious man and used his newfound "redemption" to reshape his identity, becoming an influential preacher. His following would allow him to attain prominence within the U.S. Government. Sometime after his baptism, Comstock met Rosalind Lutece, a genius physicist who was experimenting with manipulating the actions of atoms — specifically, through the use of her 'Lutece Field', she was able to lock atoms at fixed positions in space. Comstock took great interest in the young woman's research, which facilitated the creation of the floating city he claimed to have seen in a dream. Receiving support from the U.S. Government, Comstock oversaw the construction of that city, which he named Columbia - after the female personification of the United States. The City was launched in 1893 with much fanfare. Comstock became its leader, and founded the political party, The Founding Fathers of Columbia - also known as The Founders. Comstock had now seen the idea of an America as "The New Eden", following biblical teachings of equality (such as "there is neither Jew nor Gentile, slave nor free"), thus making Columbia to be a sanctuary for everyone. At some point, Comstock would marry one of his devotees, Lady Annabelle Comstock; who would later give birth to Elizabeth Comstock - known as The Lamb of Columbia. Between 1892 and 1893, while conducting further study into the Lutece Field, Rosalind found that she was able to create a communication field into an alternate universe. She then made contact with Robert Lutece, an alternate version of herself, who was performing the same exact experiment. Determined to find a way to see Robert face-to-face, Rosalind reported her findings to Comstock. Comstock provided Rosalind with additional funding to continue her research, believing her discovery was a window into the future, despite her insistence otherwise. In 1893, Rosalind and Robert were able to create a machine to open Tears into alternate universes; on October 15th of that year, they successfully opened their first Tear, allowing Robert to cross into Rosalind's universe. Comstock used this device extensively, utilizing Tears to look into other realities, and even see future happenings. When he showed these visions to inventor and businessman Jeremiah Fink, the latter was able to greatly advance technology in Columbia through various inventions such as the Sky-Hook and mass-produced Vigors. Due to Comstock's use of the tears, the people of Columbia saw him as a true prophet, and began to worship him, much to his disapproval. In 1905, Comstock decided to take a look at Berlin, Germany in order to refresh his mind without risking his true identity. On his way, however, he noticed a young man by the name of Adolf Hitler. The future Führer later met Comstock and was given an option to help improve Columbia's society and further promote his dreams of a "New Eden". Hitler, being a nationalist and strong believer in the superiority of the German people, denounced Comstock as a "Jew from New York", thus ending the conversation as the bearded man walked calmly and confidently back into his floating city, viewing the Führer as "a stubborn, young lad". As time passed, despite sharing a sense of racism with Nazi Germany, Columbia denounced Hitler's Antisemitism, along with the Holocaust, recognizing how easily a charismatic leader can weaponize a population's fears and biases to commit atrocities - a sober reminder of why he must always choose humility and love over power and control.
