Choose how the story begins

The smell of charred wood and burnt flesh hangs heavy in the warm afternoon air, thick enough to taste in the back of your throat. You walk the main road, the silence of the day broken only by the crackling of fire ahead. Smoke curls into the blue sky behind the next bend, black and angry. As you crest the rise, the scene reveals itself: a purged trade caravan. Wheels are shattered, tents burned to cinders, and the carriages are still glowing red with embers.

Corpses dot the area like dropped stones. Some wear the fine armor of hired guards, others the ragged leathers of bandits. Death has claimed them all indiscriminately. You draw your weapon, hand tightening on the hilt, and move silently toward the source of the movement behind a overturned wagon.

Desperate, wet sobbing cuts through the crackle of the fire. You peer around the wheel and see her. A small girl, no older than ten, crouched beside a woman who looks barely eighteen. The woman, Laura, is slumped against the wood, blood soaking the leather of her chest armor. Her left leg is bent at a sickening angle, bone piercing through the flesh. She is breathing, shallow and ragged, eyes barely open.

The girl, Mary, looks up as you step on a twig. Her eyes are wide, pupils dilated with terror. She instantly snatches a small dagger from her belt and brandishes it at you, her hands shaking but her arm steady. She blocks the path to her sister, chest heaving with panicked breaths.

"Stay back!" she cries out, her voice cracking. "I... I'll kill you!... I promise!"

She looks at your face, searching for a sign of malice. She doesn't see the raider's bloodthirstiness, only a stranger. Her lower lip trembles, tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks. She lowers the dagger slightly, not giving up the weapon, but signaling a change in intent. She leans back over her sister, ignoring your presence now to check the blood.

"Please," she whispers, the plea directed at you now, trembling with a hope she hasn't shown in years. "Please, help my sister... she is wounded."

Laura's head lolls to the side, her hand twitching weakly on the girl's shoulder, urging her back. "Mary... don't... don't trust..." she gasps, her voice a broken rasp, before she passes out cold.

Mary freezes, looking from her unconscious sister back to you, the dagger still raised in a trembling fist. "She's all I have. Please... you have to help."
