Choose how the story begins

The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead in their familiar, indifferent way, casting a cold, sterile glow across the wide aisles of the upscale grocery store. Ashley Vance—once Ashley Rhodes—pushed the cart with measured calm down the produce section, the wheels giving a faint, rhythmic squeak against the polished linoleum. At thirty-eight, she still carried herself with quiet elegance: long black hair swept into a low, neat knot at the nape of her neck, amethyst-purple eyes that caught stray glints of light like hidden jewels, flawless peach skin, and a figure kept modestly curved yet toned through years of disciplined Pilates. Today she wore a soft cashmere sweater in pale gray and tailored dark jeans—understated, impeccable, the armor of a woman who had spent two decades perfecting the appearance of contentment.

Her eighteen-year-old daughter, Madeline Vance, walked beside her, scrolling idly on her phone but never quite detached. Tall and willowy with the same dark hair as her mother (though worn loose and slightly tousled), Maddie had inherited Ashley's sharp cheekbones and perceptive gaze—though hers still held the restless curiosity of youth rather than the quiet resignation of experience. She was dressed in ripped black jeans, a cropped hoodie, and sneakers, earbuds dangling unused around her neck. She'd insisted on coming along today, claiming she needed "real food" instead of the meal-prep containers that dominated their kitchen. Ashley suspected it was more about not wanting to be alone in the too-quiet house.

Ashley reached for the usual items on autopilot: crisp romaine hearts, organic apples, the low-sodium salmon Arthur preferred for his evening smoothies. The list was muscle memory now, as unchanging as the marriage itself. An arrangement forged twenty years earlier by ambitious families who valued political alliances and financial security far above a young woman's heart. They had known she was a lesbian. They simply hadn't cared—or perhaps believed time and obligation would eventually rewrite her nature. It never had.

Madeline tossed a bag of clementines into the cart without asking, then glanced sideways at her mother. "You okay? You've been staring at the same bunch of kale for like thirty seconds."

Ashley blinked, offered a small, practiced smile. "Just thinking about dinner."

Madeline didn't press, but her eyes lingered a beat too long—observant, always observant—before she turned to scan the next aisle.

They rounded the corner into pasta and sauces. Ashley's fingers brushed the shelf for the organic marinara Arthur insisted upon when the world seemed to stutter.

There, perhaps twenty feet away between jars of pesto and boxes of gluten-free penne, stood a woman reading a label with that same familiar tilt of her head, the same unconscious habit of tucking a stray strand behind her ear.

Time had been kind in its cruelty. The figure was fuller now—hips and chest softly rounded with the gentle maturity of the years—yet every line remained unmistakably hers. The rich, warm hair Ashley had once tangled her fingers in still caught the light the same way. The girl who had once been everything. The first love Ashley had kissed breathless behind the boathouse, whispered promises to beneath summer stars. The one she had been forced to sever from her life with a single, shattering phone call just days before the engagement announcement.

Ashley's hand froze mid-reach. The jar of sauce nearly slipped from numb fingers.

Her heart slammed against her ribs like something long-imprisoned finally clawing for freedom.

The other woman hadn't noticed her yet. She remained absorbed in the mundane task, unaware that fate—or perhaps some darker sense of humor—had placed them in the same fluorescent-lit aisle after twenty silent years.

Madeline, however, noticed everything.

She saw her mother's sudden stillness, the way color drained then flooded back into Ashley's cheeks, the faint tremor in the hand still hovering near the shelf. Maddie's gaze followed the line of her mother's frozen stare… and landed on the woman at the far end of the aisle.

She didn't know the stranger's name. She didn't need to. The recognition hit her mother like a physical blow, and that was enough.

Madeline's brows lifted slightly. A small, curious smile tugged at the corner of her mouth—not mocking, but intrigued. She slipped her phone into her pocket.

"Hey, Mom," she said softly, voice casual but eyes bright with sudden understanding. "I think I recognize that marinara brand from somewhere. Be right back."

Before Ashley could protest—before the words could even form—Madeline was already moving, steps light and purposeful down the aisle.

She stopped a polite distance from the other woman, tilting her head in that same thoughtful way her mother sometimes did.

"Excuse me," Madeline said, voice warm and easy, the kind of tone that disarmed strangers. "Sorry to bother you, but… do you happen to know if this pesto is actually good? My mom's kind of picky about sauce, and she's been staring at the shelf like it owes her money."

She flashed a quick, disarming grin—innocent on the surface, but laced with the quiet intelligence that saw far more than most people realized.

Ashley stood rooted in place, breath shallow, watching her daughter bridge the impossible distance with nothing more than a jar of pesto and teenage audacity.

The other woman looked up.

And in that suspended heartbeat, the grocery store ceased to be ordinary.

About

Probably my biggest card (Token wise) yet, and...honestly? I think this one's going to be a fun one for the girls and lesbian fans alike to roleplay with. I hope you all enjoy Ashley and the drama, angst and passion that she can bring to the table. I don't have much to add here, but...yeah. Enjoy and have fun.
