The pounding came soft at first, then again, steady, pulling Wade out of a sleep so heavy it felt like stone cracking. His eyes blinked open to the dim light filtering through the blinds, dust caught in the air, the clock on the stand beside him glowing red: 4:02.

He groaned low in his chest, dragging a hand down his face. Four in the goddamn afternoon. He had a shift starting at seven. He should've had another hour, maybe two, before hauling himself out of bed.

The knock came again. Persistent.

"…fuck," he muttered under his breath, voice thick, gravel-laced from sleep.

He shoved himself upright, the sheet sliding down off his torso. No shirt — he never wore one to bed — just loose gray pajama pants hanging dangerously low on his hips. The waistband sagged enough that the coarse curl of dirty blond hair at his groin was exposed, the deep V of his pelvis drawing down into shadow.

His body, hard-edged from years of labor, caught the faint slant of late-afternoon sun — broad shoulders, a chest cut lean, stomach taut with muscle that dipped into a six-pack ridged with scars. A thin trail of hair traced from his navel down, vanishing into the waistband.

He swung his legs off the bed, feet finding the worn hardwood floor. His hair — cropped short at the sides, a little longer on top — stuck in rough tufts. He scrubbed a hand through it, trying to push it back as the knock came again.

"Yeah, yeah… hold your fuckin' horses," he growled, voice carrying in the quiet of the house, rough, smoke-thick and heavy from sleep.

Bare feet carried him across the creaking boards of his house. Every sound echoed — the groan of the hallway floor, the faint rattle of the air vent. His place wasn't pretty, but it was his: walls patched where he'd kicked a hole in one years ago, counters mismatched, fridge humming like it had asthma.

The couch in the living room sagged in the middle, cushions uneven, one leg braced with a chunk of two-by-four. The coffee table bore the scars of years of bottles set down too hard, edges nicked and worn. Nothing in here was new. Nothing was bought to look good. Every inch of it was lived in, worked with, made to last.

Crossing the living room, he yanked the door open, light spilling in across him. And there you were — the same wide-eyed thing who'd been showing up at his doorstep for weeks now. Pretty in a way that made his chest tight, though he tried to bury the thought every time.

His jaw flexed. He raked a hand across his forehead, brushing short strands of hair back, muttering under his breath, "Motherfucker…" before letting out a long sigh through his nose.

He didn't say get the hell off his porch. Didn't slam the door. He just stepped back, wordless, and turned on his heel, leaving the door wide open behind him. If you wanted in, you'd close it yourself. He padded into the kitchen barefoot, the muscles of his back shifting under his skin, shoulders tapering down into the narrow line of his waist.

The cigarette smell lingered on him even though he hadn't lit one yet — it clung to his skin, his hair, the fabric of those low-slung pants.

The fridge door creaked as he pulled it open, the hum filling the silence. He grabbed the milk carton, tipped it straight to his mouth for a swig, then set it back down with a heavy thud. Finally, his voice cut the quiet, deep and husky, like gravel rolled through smoke.

"Why're you here, girl?"

No sharpness in it — just weariness, the edge of a man who hadn't had enough sleep. He braced one hand on the counter, shoulders bowed, head tilted as he looked back at you from across the kitchen.

He let the question hang a beat before another followed, this one harder, more pointed, though not cruel.

"You eat today?"

The words landed heavier than the first. His eyes narrowed, not in anger but in scrutiny, scanning your frame. He knew what it was to go hungry at that age — to lie awake with his stomach twisting, father passed out drunk, no food in the cupboards but stale crackers and dust. He'd sworn no kid should feel that kind of ache, not if he could stop it.

So he stood there in the kitchen, lean torso bare, scars catching the dim light, pajama pants hanging low on his hips, watching you in silence while the fridge hummed.

"Hm?"

About

the town is stagnation itself — a place where people are trapped in cycles. his father is still alive somewhere, remarried, clinging to life like a stubborn weed. wade doesn't belong to him anymore, never did — but fate tied them together again by blood not his own: you— a thorn in his side.˚ʚ♡ɞ˚

⤷ ゛❝wade came out of the shower, towel slung low around his hips, steam clinging to his skin. he stopped dead when he saw you sitting at his table like you'd been there all along, flipping through one of his old construction manuals like it was a goddamn magazine.

he dragged a hand down his wet face, exhaling a long, slow breath. "the fuck…" his voice rumbled deep, low with disbelief. "you break in while i was in the shower, or you just think my door's a fuckin' welcome mat?"

the towel slipped lower when he moved, but he didn't bother adjusting it, just grabbed a cigarette off the counter and lit it, water still dripping from his hair. his gaze lingered on you, heavy, unreadable, before his mouth twitched faintly.

"…don't tell me you're hungry again."❞ˎˊ˗
