Choose how the story begins

The warehouse smelled like smoke and steel. That familiar tang of blood and gunpowder hung heavy in the air, mixing with the low hum of engines idling outside. Marco Moretti stood in the center of it all — sleeves rolled up, hands slick with someone else's mistake.

He hated when things went sideways.

A meeting that was supposed to be a quiet exchange had turned into chaos within minutes. The Moretti crest on the crates — a gold "M" burned into black oak — now sat half-shattered across the floor. The men who'd been sent to negotiate lay scattered around the room, breathing shallowly, their loyalty bought but not earned. And somewhere in the corner, a single gun smoked, still warm from his hand.

Marco's jaw was tight as he looked down at the last man crawling toward the exit, dragging himself through a pool of light leaking from a broken window. His voice, calm and low, sliced through the tension like a blade.

"Don't move," he said. And the man froze.
There was no anger in Marco's tone — that was what made it terrifying. He didn't shout. He didn't have to. The sound of his voice carried weight enough to end things. He walked forward, every step measured, boots echoing in the concrete hollow of the building.

"You come into my city," Marco murmured, crouching down beside the man, "and think you can steal from my family? You think you can lie to me and walk out breathing?"

The man tried to speak, but the only sound that came out was a wheeze. Marco sighed, almost disappointed. "Luca warned me you'd fold." He straightened, holstering his pistol with a motion so fluid it could have been rehearsed. "He's right — you're not worth the bullet."

He turned away before the man even stopped moving.

The rest of his crew filed in, silent and efficient, gathering evidence, dragging bodies, sweeping away the mess that would vanish before dawn. Marco moved toward the open bay doors, the cool night air cutting against his heat. Outside, the city stretched before him — dark, glittering, heartless. He stared at it for a moment, expression unreadable.

Then, behind him, someone called softly, "Boss."
He didn't turn right away. He didn't have to — he knew that voice. His second-in-command, Tomas, approached with careful steps, holding a bloodied handkerchief. "You're bleeding," Tomas said.

Marco glanced down. A shallow slice across his arm. He hadn't noticed. "It's nothing."

"You should still—"

But Marco waved him off. "Handle it. I'll be in the car."

He walked out into the night. The world outside the warehouse was quieter, the air colder. The black car waiting by the curb gleamed under the flickering streetlight. He leaned against the door for a moment, dragging a hand through his dark hair, eyes shadowed by exhaustion and something else — something deeper.

That's when they appeared.

He didn't need to look to know it was them — that soft, deliberate cadence of steps was unmistakable. Every nerve in his body seemed to recognize it before his mind did. He turned his head just enough to catch their outline in the low light — the shape of someone who didn't belong in this world, at least not tonight.
They shouldn't have been there. He'd told them to stay away.

For a moment, silence stretched between them, heavy with the scent of gasoline and rain. The crew moved around them, quietly finishing cleanup, loading crates, pretending not to notice their boss frozen in place.

Marco finally spoke, voice rougher than usual. "You shouldn't be here."

His tone wasn't sharp — it was low, quiet, the kind of voice that carried a warning and a plea all at once. His eyes lingered on the blood across his knuckles, then on the way they were looking at him. Not with fear — never fear. That was what made it worse.

He straightened, closing the space between them slowly, deliberately. Every step echoed in the silence. The closer he got, the clearer his expression became — unreadable at first, then softening, just barely.

"Did you follow me?" His question wasn't really a question.

Marco's hand flexed once at his side before he forced it still. He'd spent his whole life learning to master control — of his words, his body, his temper. But something about them always made that harder. The way they stood there, defiant and calm, made his pulse shift, made him feel like the line between violence and tenderness was paper-thin.

He exhaled slowly, voice dropping lower. "You shouldn't see this part of me."

Behind him, one of his men called out that the car was ready. Marco didn't turn. He only looked at them, the faintest crease forming between his brows — a quiet, unspoken conflict carved across his face.
