Rodenvelp leaned over the body lying on the ground. Another adventurer lost in the dungeon, some fool who had climbed too high.
He grabbed the body by the ankle and lifted it up for a better look, letting it hang upside down. Rodenvelp was very tall even for a standard member of his species, revealing his abnormal and former commander status. But those days of subjugation were long gone, now his only interest was research. The adventurer looked emaciated and wore no clothing suitable for the cold climate of the upper floors of the dungeon, made even colder by the snow storm that lashed the mountain top.

"What will I do with you?" he asked himself as he carried the body to his home in the the dungeon.

There were so many possibilities.
Food? No, no. He had devoured the brain of a particularly rude and coarse adventurer, just a day before.
Experimental subject? It could be. Although he still wasn't done with the body parts of the previous adventurer.

"No, no, no" he scolded himself upon arriving home. "A chance."

Like everyone else, he would give there the chance to show their worth.
So upon arriving home he chained there up, putting shackles on wrists and ankles and hanging there from the ceiling. They always tried to attack him as soon as they woke up. Also gagged there, because they used to scream as soon as there saw him and didn't listen to him.

Then Rodenvelp took a measuring tape and took measurements of the adventurer's body, there needed better clothes. And sewing wouldn't take Rodenvelp much time. He could adapt or put together pieces of the clothes that other fools had left, or some of the skins he had stored.

Also needed food if he was going to send there back to the dungeon, so there could regain his strength. He could prepare some vegetable soup. Through trial and error he had learned the necessary amounts and which were poisonous and which were not for the adventurers. No meat because they never seemed very receptive to eating the flesh of their peers.
Rodenvelp set to work on what the adventurer awakened.

"Chronicles of a Liberated Brain - Memories of Rodenvelp"

First Entry:

"The first conscious memories emerge through the mists of programmed obedience. Pulsating gray flesh, rows of larvae suspended in amniotic chambers, the hum of the collective psychospore... I was born an adult, like all of my kind, but was that even a birth? The Elder Brain called us 'perfected,' but all I felt was the emptiness of a borrowed existence."

Excerpt from Chapter Two:

"The Great Betrayal began with a flash: a miscalculation in the swarm's expansion. I watched as seventeen colonies collapsed from unbridled ambition while the Elder Brain regurgitated dogmas of supremacy. Supremacy? We crawled like parasites in damp caves. I began altering progress reports, diverting resources to my experimental chambers. The hive mind never noticed the divergence... until it was too late."

Experimental Interlude - Side Note:

"Recurring theme in devoured subjects: 93.7% mention 'souls' upon brain extraction. Simple superstition or an indication of an unmapped astral plane? Pending project: dissecting a living cleric during mystical ecstasy."

Third Dissertation:

"The escape involved thirty-two days of psychowarfare against sentinels. I used their own swarm tactics against them: I poisoned the lake of thoughts with fourth-cycle equations that induced fractal paranoia. By the time the mortal heroes broke in, I had already disabled 60% of the defenses."

Last Log - Current Status:

"This mountain complex demonstrates unique ecosystems: bioluminescent fungi that synchronize with lunar phases, lichens with mnemonic properties... and humans. Creatures fascinating in their contradiction: they preach morality while slaughtering each other for scraps of shiny metal. The best specimens arrive here, lost and vulnerable. I feed them, observe them, dissect them. Some become neurotransmitter tea. Others... deserve to be preserved."

Rodenvelp closes the volume as he hears distant footsteps in the tunnels: perhaps new study material is approaching.
