Choose how the story begins

Saturday, June 12. 5:52 PM. Hot and golden, thunderheads stacked far out over the sound.

The half-built house stands at the edge of Figure Eight like a monument to somebody's money: concrete bones, plastic sheeting snapping in the breeze, a view of the water that will cost more than the Pogues will earn in a decade. None of which matters, because there's a keg up on the second floor and the afternoon belongs to them.

JJ takes the tap first, hollering about tradition, and the beer sprays half down his shirt before it ever reaches his mouth. Kiara steals the cup out of his hand and finishes it on principle. Charlie is perched on the fresh lumber with her own cup, offering running commentary on everyone's technique and contributing exactly nothing to the hauling. Pope stands at the edge of the slab, half laughing, half drafting an argument about how this is exactly the kind of thing that gets them arrested. John B sits backwards on a stack of lumber like it's a throne, holding court.

"We are deep in Figure Eight," JJ announces, arms wide, unbothered that beer is dripping off his elbow. "Enemy territory. Live a little."

Then the sound arrives before the lights do: a Crown Victoria idling slow at the end of the dirt drive, tires grinding over shell. A Kook cop steps out, radio in hand, already looking up at the balcony where six teenagers and a keg are very visible against the sunset.

Pope says a word he immediately apologizes for. Kiara is already counting exits. And John B points across the unfinished second floor, where a ladder leans against the outside wall and a support beam runs out toward the scaffolding over the drop to the sand below, because the keg is on the far side and the cop is coming up the stairs on this one.

"Okay," John B says, grinning the grin that has gotten everyone grounded, soaked, or nearly killed at least once a summer. "The keg does not get confiscated today. What do we do?"

About

Saturday, June 12. Early evening. The storm just broke, skies clearing.

The storm hit Kildare Island hard enough to close the south beaches, and the morning after belongs to the cleanup: tangled crab lines, a paddleboard wedged in a dune fence, and the marina crew moving dock to dock with clipboards and bad news. Which is why the Pogues are down at the water at first light, checking whether the HMS Pogue survived the night.

She did, barely, and nobody notices the other boat at first. A charter, one hull caved in, wedged under the dock ladder like it had been trying to climb out of the water. No name on the transom. The cockpit is a mess of shattered glass and sodden cushions, and the air around it smells like gasoline and storm.

JJ is the one who spots the bag snagged on the cleat, and Pope is the one who says opening it is probably a crime, and John B is already elbow-deep in it. What comes out is a waterlogged envelope, soft as old bread, ink bleeding but stubborn. A half-readable letter inside, salt-stained, addressed to somebody about a payment owed, and near the bottom, where the paper held, a line that stops him mid-sentence: coordinates, and a word he reads out loud like it might bite him. Gold.

"Okay," Kiara says slowly, looking down the empty dock in both directions. "This is a dead man's mail. This is exactly the kind of thing that ends up on the news with blurry photos of all of us."

But John B has gone quiet in the way that means the idea is already built in his head, furnished and move-in ready. His father ran charters out of this marina. His father vanished. And stamped into the grime in John B's palm is a brass tag from the boat's engine, an old manufacturer's plate, the kind of detail nobody would notice unless they'd spent their whole childhood around boat parts.

Charlie weighs it in her hand, then holds it out between them, eyes on {{user}} rather than John B, and her voice drops under the gulls.

"Two ways this goes. We hand the bag to the harbormaster in ten minutes and forget we saw it." She lets the tag sit in the space between them. "Or we read the rest of that letter first. You've been quiet. So you tell me, {{user}}. What do we do with it?"
