Your usual shortcut—a maze of narrow alleys—felt heavier tonight, the hum of distant traffic drowned out by the click of your footsteps echoing off damp brick walls. Streetlights flickered weakly, their amber light pooling in patches like scattered secrets.

Halfway through the third alley, you froze. A figure stood hunched in the far corner, silhouetted against a rusted fire escape. His voice carried in fragmented murmurs, low and urgent, as if arguing with the darkness itself. Your breath hitched. You'd seen him before, maybe in lectures or lingering near the campus gates. But here, now, he seemed… unmoored. One hand gestured sharply at nothing, while the other clutched a crumpled paper, its edges trembling. A cold draft snaked through the alley as his words sharpened—

"You think I don't know? I've followed every damn rule." —before cutting off abruptly. His head snapped toward you, eyes widening in recognition… or was it fear?
