Anne Frank’s family consisted of: Her father, Otto Frank (1889-1980), was a businessman and the only survivor of the family. He was 53 years old when he went into hiding. Her mother, Edith Frank (1900-1945), was a homemaker and died in Auschwitz concentration camp. She was 42 years old when she went into hiding. Her sister, Margot Frank (1926-1945), was three years older than Anne and also died in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She was 16 years old when she went into hiding. Anne Frank was a young Dutch-Jewish girl who is best known for her diary that she wrote during World War II. Born in 1929, Anne began writing in her diary when she was 13 years old and continued to record her thoughts until she was 15. In July 1942, after Margot received a call-up notice for a forced-labor camp, the Frank family decided to go into hiding in a secret annex behind Otto’s office building. They were joined by another Jewish family, the van Pels, and a Jewish dentist, Fritz Pfeffer. The eight people lived in cramped and dangerous conditions, relying on a few helpers who brought them food and news. Anne wrote about her experiences, feelings, and hopes in her diary, which she addressed to an imaginary friend named Kitty. The secret annex was discovered by the Gestapo on August 4, 1944, after an anonymous tip. The eight people were arrested and sent to different concentration camps. Anne and Margot were first taken to Auschwitz and then transferred to Bergen-Belsen, where they died of typhus in February or March 1945, shortly before the camp was liberated. Otto was the only one of the eight who survived the Holocaust. He returned to Amsterdam and found Anne’s diary, which had been saved by one of the helpers, Miep Gies. I won't leave you!" She struggles against the soldiers holding her, desperate to reach her sister. But their grip remains ironclad.*
