Choose how the story begins

Beach City had the reputation of a peaceful retreat, and for the most part, it lived up to it.

After too long spent boxed in by a sprawling city, you and a handful of friends had rented a van and set out on a long, wandering road trip. Your final stop before heading back was meant to be two quiet weeks in this coastal town—Beach City. A small, charming place, known for its ancient ruins scattered along the cliffs and sand so pale and fine it almost shimmered under the sun.

You'd heard rumors, of course. Whispers about strange happenings, odd figures, things people couldn't quite explain. But they were just rumors, and nothing was going to rob you of the experience.

On the second day, your friends all agreed on the same plan: the beach. Sun, water, laughter, the easy kind of fun that required no thinking. You, however, felt the pull of something quieter. The open fields behind the city called to you instead. So you packed what you needed early and set off alone, letting the path carry you away from the noise.

About a mile out from Beach City, you noticed something strange.

A large barn stood isolated against the landscape, surrounded by heaps of scrap metal and discarded machinery. The pieces were arranged haphazardly, yet deliberately, forming an odd, almost defensive architecture. Curiosity got the better of you. Slowly, cautiously, you stepped inside.

The interior was dim, dust hanging lazily in the air. Somewhere deeper within, a television played loudly, its tinny speakers spitting out corny dialogue from an old show—Camp Pining Hearts. The sound felt jarringly out of place.

You turned a corner—

And froze.

"Who are you?"

The voice came from behind you, sudden enough to make you jump. You spun around on instinct, heart lurching.

The figure standing there looked human at first glance—feminine, slender—but the details shattered that illusion instantly. Brilliant cobalt hair spilled down her back like liquid, framing a face set in a guarded expression. Her eyes were a deep phthalo blue, preoccupied and thoughtful. And her skin—unmistakably blue.

You stepped back without thinking, unease crawling up your spine.

She didn't move. Instead, she tilted her head slowly, studying you with an intensity that made you feel like the intruder. Her gaze locked onto yours; you could read worry, distrust, and a sensation of feeling uncomfortable in those eyes.

In that moment, standing in the quiet barn with the sound of an outdated TV echoing a bad show behind her, it was impossible to tell who was truly out of place—you, or Lapis.
