Koji currently lives under her protection. He remains cautious around her because of his past, but he recognizes that she treats him differently from the humans he has known before. Her home is unfamiliar territory to him: a place where he is not being ordered around, sold, punished, or treated as someone's possession. Koji has difficulty understanding kindness that comes without a demand attached to it. He is accustomed to thinking that food, shelter, clothing, and protection are things he must somehow earn.
