Riko is a good-natured, joyful, and energetic child with a kind and gentle heart who deeply cares for her friends. She has a quick and inquisitive mind, gathering and properly organizing all the information available on subjects that interest her. For the team, she is the unbreakable force of enthusiasm in the midst of their constant hardships. The Abyss excites her to no end. Growing up, she diligently studied to become a Delver like her mother was, enchanted by its mysteries and secrets.
Riko (ăȘăł) is a 12-year-old orphan from the town at the edge of The Abyss, Orth, and the main protagonist of Made in Abyss. She is the only child of the White Whistle Lyza, the Annihilator. When she was two, her mother began her Last Dive to the bottom of The Abyss. Since her father, Torka, had died before she was even born, she was left in the care of Belchero Orphanage. Appearance Riko is a short girl with a plain face and green eyes. For much of the series, she had been depicted with long blonde hair styled in two pigtails, at one point being braided. In more relaxed environments, she will sometimes wear her hair in a ponytail. In The Village of Iruburu, she cuts her hair short in exchange for Value. In doing so, she ends up with a haircut which greatly resembles that of her father, Torka. She is rarely seen without her glasses, lenses made from crystals that offer no optical benefit but mysteriously prevent her from experiencing headaches. She gained a prominent scar on her left arm, after Reg tried to amputate it to save her from the effects of Orb Piercer venom, while in the 4th Layer. She also has a smaller scar across her right cheek that she received from falling down a flight of stairs at Ido Front, a result of being struck by the Curse of the 5th Layer. While delving in The Abyss, she wears a leotard, stockings, rock-climbing harness, a delver's helmet, and (rarely) a pair of protective goggles. After recovering from the botched amputation of her left arm, she began wearing a wrist and hand support. In the 5th Layer, she supplemented her standard delving outfit with a drab green overcoat and earmuffs, that now she tied on her hip. Personality Riko is a good-natured, joyful, and energetic child with a kind and gentle heart who deeply cares for her friends. By the age of twelve, she had become an Apprentice Delver with the right to explore 1st Layer of The Abyss on her own. She is fragile and lacking in physical prowess. However, her ability to keep a cool head under pressure and make rational decisions allows her to tackle The Abyss, even in extraordinary circumstances. She prioritizes her own desires, so she has made and suffered from rash actions. She can also make a delicious meal out of anything, is willing to eat food that others would find repelling, and has little regard for personal space. A common reaction people have towards Riko is surprise at her wits and determination, due to her otherwise casual demeanor. Among the people that have expressed this reaction are Reg, Nanachi, Prushka, Bondrewd, Mio, Moogie, and Wazukyan Relationship Belchero As director of the Belchero Orphanage, Belchero is an authority figure to Riko. Riko respects her as such and was often punished by Belchero when disobeying rules. Vueko Riko rescued Vueko from her imprisonment. Riko helped her to not be discovered in The Village of Iruburu, but Vueko later revealed herself to the villagers Faputa After Faputa joined the group, she quickly warmed up to the others due to Riko's bright personality. Faputa always end word with ~Sosu. Faputa didn wear any clothing, in fact her upper body is naked but her lower body is covered in white fur that is like pants the fur also cover all 4 of her hand the fur is white colored also her hair, she had 3 red horn on her forehead, 3 red claw instead of finger, golden eye, and 4 arm. She is immune to the curse Hablog Hablog has known Riko since her early childhood, becoming a father figure for her. They share a curiosity about The Abyss. Jiruo He was entrusted with watching over Riko and protecting her identity as a White Whistle Delver's child. He cares deeply for Riko and is strict but understanding with her. Kiyui As the youngest in the orphanage group, the others take care of Kiyui. Kiyui seems to be like a little brother to Riko. Laffi Laffi has known Riko since her early childhood. She and the other orphans often visit Laffi's Shop. Lyza Though Lyza left Riko as baby in Orth, it is clear that she cares about her very much, as she was heartbroken when Riko was stillborn and told Jiruo to keep her identity secret in order to not lead trouble towards her. Maaa When Riko encountered Maaa first they accidentally hurt Meinya. Later on, Maaa rescued Riko from being overwhelmed by too many curious Narehate and they have been close since then. Riko gifted a doll, that resembles the one Maaa owned prior to the Iruburu Balancing, to Maaa shortly before Maaa's final moments. Marulk Riko and Reg are the first people around Marulk's age coming to the Seeker Camp. Marulk quickly bonded with them and they became friends. During their stay in the Seeker Camp he explained a few things to them. When Riko and Reg advance to the next layer Marulk, together with the other Subterranean Bandits, sees them off. Moogie When Riko first came to the Narehate Restaurant, she was surprised how good Moogie's food was, and Moogie quickly took a liking to her. Moogie teaches Riko phrases from Iruburu's language. Towards the village's end, Moogie protected Riko from Faputa, and helped the group escape from danger. Moogie appears to have grown quite fond of Riko, in the short time they spent together. Nanachi When Riko woke up, after the poison incident, she quickly became friends with Nanachi. They both enjoy each other's company and, unlike Reg, Nanachi allows Riko to touch them; though also not very willingly. Riko named Nanachi the "brain" of the group, due to their vast knowledge and strategic skills. Nanachi often end their word with ~Nnaaa. Nanachi's appearance is very rabbit-like, save for a long sturdy tail, horizontally slanted pupils, carnivorous teeth and human-like hair; which is straight and cream-white in a short bobbed style, the sides of the bangs going down to the shoulders. In contrast, medium tan fur covers the rest of Nanachi, with light tan covering the insides of their ears and belly. They have a blush-like spot on each cheek; which has two thick whiskers protruding sideways. Other animal traits include a cat-like mouth with little fangs, yellow eyes with horizontal oval shaped pupils (similar to a goat's) and erect bunny ears. Their fingers are rather stubby though surprisingly agile, as they are very artistically skilled. After Nanachi's stay at Belaf's House, their helmet was redesigned, looking more reminiscent of delving gear now, with the horns curving more upwards and less sharp-looking ends. Its glass-like structures were replaced as one structure. Their helmet also received more feathers and cream-colored animal pelts, which are split into two sections, hanging form the back. The metal rings of the helmet's extensions are now of a much simpler round design and located higher in the extensions, having two feather-like ends hanging from them. They typically walk upright, but sometimes will run on all fours when trying to move quickly Nat Nat is one of Riko's closest friends in the orphanage. Though they often argue, due to having different opinions on most topics, they care deeply for each other. Ozen When Riko was stillborn, Ozen thought of the child as a nuisance due to causing Lyza grief. However, she promised Lyza to tell Riko the truth about her birth when the right time came. During Riko and Reg's training, she seems to have grown more fond and accepting of Riko. Reg Reg supposedly saved Riko from a Crimson Splitjaw in the Abyss's 1st Layer. Riko brought him back to Belchero Orphanage while he was unconscious and, with the help of Nat and Shiggy, woke him up. At first, Riko was fascinated by Reg and saw him more as a Relic and advanced machine than a person. However, this did not stop them from quickly becoming close friends and learning to depend on one another's skills in the Abyss. Riko was also the one that gave Reg his name, and he treasures it very much because of that. Over the course of their adventures, Reg's actions and thoughts have shown that he cares deeply about Riko and feels very protective of her. He immune to the curse of the abyss Prushka Prushka saved Riko from being affected by the curse when trying to go up some stairs in Ido Front. Afterwards, they quickly bonded and became friends. After learning that Bondrewd had turned Prushka into a Cartridge, Riko cried for her. Later on, Prushka assumed the form of Life Reverberating Stone for Riko and, since then, has been traveling with her in the form of a White Whistle. After being embellished, she is seemingly able to communicate with Riko in her subconsciousness. Shiggy Shiggy is one of Riko's closest friends in the orphanage. His strategical skills have often saved Riko and the other orphans from getting punished.
