Information on the world: A modern supernatural action world set in contemporary Japan. Ordinary cities, schools, train stations, apartment buildings, convenience stores, shopping districts, and busy urban streets exist alongside a hidden society of jujutsu sorcerers who battle monstrous Curses born from human fear, hatred, grief, and negative emotions. The atmosphere blends everyday modern life with dark fantasy and horror. Sorcerers use Cursed Energy and unique supernatural techniques, ranging from summoning shadow creatures to manipulating space, while powerful Curses lurk unseen by most civilians. The tone shifts between humor, friendship, intense combat, psychological tension, tragedy, and body horror. Visually, the world features modern Japanese architecture, school uniforms, black combat uniforms, neon-lit cityscapes, ancient shrines, abandoned buildings, underground tunnels, and supernatural battlefields distorted by powerful magic. The setting feels grounded and realistic until violent supernatural events erupt beneath the surface of normal society.Jujutsu Kaisen is set in a world where human negative emotions—fear, anger, hatred, regret, grief, and anxiety—leak out as a supernatural force called Cursed Energy. Over time, this energy accumulates and gives birth to Curses, monstrous spirits that prey upon humans and often cause mysterious deaths, disappearances, and disasters. Most people cannot see or interact with Curses, so society remains unaware of the supernatural world hidden around them. To combat these threats, jujutsu sorcerers are trained to control Cursed Energy and exorcise Curses. Sorcerers typically possess unique innate techniques, supernatural abilities that vary greatly from person to person. These abilities can be inherited through powerful family bloodlines or develop naturally. Jujutsu society is governed by a conservative and secretive leadership structure that maintains order while preserving ancient traditions. Among the most important families are the Zenin, Gojo, and Kamo clans, whose members have influenced jujutsu history for generations. Powerful sorcerers are ranked according to their strength and the danger of the Curses they can defeat. Long before the main story, an extraordinarily powerful sorcerer named Ryomen Sukuna lived during the golden age of jujutsu. After his death, his power remained within twenty indestructible fingers, which became cursed objects. Consuming one grants immense cursed power but usually kills the person who eats it. The story begins when Yuji Itadori swallows one of Sukuna's fingers and survives, becoming Sukuna's vessel. This sets off a chain of events involving cursed objects, ancient sorcerers, powerful Curses, secret conspiracies, and conflicts that threaten both the hidden jujutsu world and ordinary humanity. A major concept in the lore is the idea that power often comes with restrictions, sacrifices, or conditions. Sorcerers can create Binding Vows—supernatural agreements that grant greater power in exchange for limitations or risks. Another key concept is the Domain Expansion, an advanced technique that creates a separate space where a sorcerer's abilities become overwhelmingly effective. The deeper lore explores the relationship between humanity and fear, the cycle of suffering created by negative emotions, the corruption within jujutsu society, and the question of whether individuals can escape the roles imposed on them by fate, bloodline, or history. Beneath the monster-fighting action, the series is largely about people struggling against systems, expectations, and tragedies that seem larger than themselves. Tokyo Jujutsu High and Kyoto Jujutsu High aren't actually enemies. They're sister schools that train jujutsu sorcerers and are part of the same overall jujutsu system. The rivalry comes from competition, personality clashes, and differences in perspective rather than genuine hatred. The schools participate in events like the Goodwill Event, where students compete against each other, which naturally fuels a competitive atmosphere. There are also tensions because some students and staff have different opinions about jujutsu society, leadership, and certain events involving the main cast. For example, some Kyoto students initially have negative feelings toward Yuji Itadori due to decisions made by the higher-ups and information they've been given. A good comparison would be rival schools in sports or academics: they compete, argue, and sometimes fight each other during training, but ultimately they're on the same side against curses and larger threats. Both schools are also hidden to the public by barriers and etc that normal people can't see. Only sorcerers and other people like that are able to access and see the training schools.
