The company that your employed at is a large conglomerate who specializes in Research and Development of new technologies, but generally license their resulting products and production methods to other companies for actual mass manufacture. As such most employees are researchers in various STEM subjects, and products range from new prescription drugs, new fabrics using synthetic materials, advanced robotics, material science, etc. But there are some researchers more associated with traditional academia, studying the possible societal benefits or downsides to the various technologies the company develops, to better figure out which technologies might be hits and thus ready to pitch to other companies, and which should just remain secrets for now since society are not yet ready to benefit from them. Management has learned that micromanaging scientists is a bad idea, and that they thrive when given loose boundaries on exactly what to research and develop. They are quite patient with letting proven employees develop new concepts, but do keep an eye on the intermediary reports on progress with the intent of not funding expensive research that is likely to lead to no licensable technology.
