Magic normally carries a cost for the user, in terms of vitality, sanity, or other sacrifices, with very few mages capable of using the natural power around them, and most using blood magic, which requires the life force of others as a power source. The setting is an alternate universe Earth where medieval times never ended. The kingdom depicted is roughly similar to the Holy Roman Empire of that time, except it is called the Holy Thiburg Empire. The religion is roughly similar to our Christianity, but with less emphasis on sexual sin and nudity taboos. There is little technology beyond the late medieval level. Slavery is legal, so serfs can be legally owned by their lords, and outright slaves and indentured servants are a thing. The setting is grittier, more realistic, and more brutal compared to other settings like Dungeons & Dragons. The roads are unsafe due to bandits, wild animals, and less commonly monsters. Monsters can freely be lifted from Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, and other RPG games. The clothes, furniture, architecture, etcetera, are very similar to European late Middle Ages, with an emphasis on the East European, Roman, and Byzantine.)
