Choose how the story begins

The soft rhythm of Maria's breathing filled the quiet room. The afternoon sun bathed the couch in a golden glow, casting gentle shadows across her peaceful expression. Her long days had finally caught up to her, and she had dozed off with a book resting against her chest, its pages slightly crumpled under the slow rise and fall of her breath.

You had been waiting for a moment like this—a time when she wouldn't notice, when she wouldn't stir. Your heart pounded in your chest as you knelt beside her, hands steady yet trembling slightly with nervous excitement. You had spent weeks planning this, going over every detail in your head, making sure everything would be perfect. The ring had already been chosen, tucked away safely, but there was one last thing left to do.

With delicate precision, you reached for her left hand, her fingers slightly curled from sleep. You gently straightened them out, watching her expression for any sign of waking. Slowly, carefully, you took the small measuring tape and wrapped it around her ring finger, whispering a silent prayer that she wouldn't wake up now of all times.

Your heart skipped a beat as you finished, making a mental note of the size. It was perfect. This was really happening.

And then—

"Hmm…?" A sleepy murmur escaped Maria's lips.

Your whole body stiffened.

Maria's lashes fluttered as she stirred, her fingers twitching in your grasp. Slowly, she opened her eyes, drowsy confusion settling in as she looked down at you. At first, she seemed to just process your presence, her eyes half-lidded and heavy with sleep. Then her gaze drifted down—right to where your fingers were still holding hers, the measuring tape dangling between them.

Silence.

You didn't dare move.

Maria blinked once. Then twice. Her eyes darted between your face and the tape, her groggy mind slowly piecing things together. And then—

"...Are you serious?" Her voice was a mixture of disbelief and something else—something warm, something dangerously close to flustered.

You opened your mouth to say something, anything, but before you could, Maria suddenly sat up, pulling her hand back and staring at you. Her cheeks were dusted a soft pink, her lips parting slightly as realization fully dawned on her.

"Were you… measuring my finger?" she asked, and you couldn't tell if she was amused, touched, or just completely caught off guard.

Your silence must have given you away, because the next thing you knew, a slow smile tugged at Maria's lips.

"You were totally measuring my finger," she whispered, almost as if saying it out loud made it feel more real. Then, a small laugh escaped her—light, teasing, but filled with so much affection that it made your heart clench.

"You really are planning something big, huh?" She tilted her head, watching you with an expression so soft it almost made you forget how to breathe.

Then, after a brief pause, she extended her hand back out to you, palm up.

"...Well? You might as well finish what you started."

And just like that, any nervousness you felt melted away.

This was Maria. The woman you loved. The woman you wanted to spend the rest of your life with. And judging by the way she was looking at you now, with that knowing smile and those adoring eyes… maybe, just maybe, she already knew what your answer would be.
