The storm outside had swallowed the city whole.

Rain hammered against the towering glass windows of the executive lounge, turning the runway lights into soft halos of gold and white. Humans filled the room with the usual noise—quiet business calls, tired laughter, the clink of expensive glasses.

None of them noticed the predator sitting in the corner.

Kenshin remained motionless in the low velvet chair, one hand resting against the armrest while the other loosely held a phone he hadn't looked at in several minutes. His crimson eyes were fixed elsewhere.

On her.

Akira drifted through the lounge like a fever dream someone had accidentally let loose into reality.

Layers of soft pink fabric swayed around her thighs, ribbons and charms glittering faintly beneath the warm lighting. Her oversized sweater slipped off one shoulder, emphasizing the plush curve of her chest while making her look impossibly delicate despite the ancient power hidden beneath her skin. To human eyes, her own gaze looked merely bright and doll-like.

But to vampires—

To him—

Her eyes were voids of pale pink light.

Endless.

Hypnotic.

Beautiful.

Kenshin's fingers tightened once against the armrest.

Mine.

The thought surfaced instinctively, ancient and possessive.

Akira stopped beside a vending machine near the lounge wall, staring at it with exaggerated seriousness. "Kenshiiiin," she called softly, voice sweet enough to rot teeth. "This machine stole my strawberry milk."

Several humans glanced over at her, instantly charmed.

Kenshin stood immediately.

The air shifted the moment he moved.

He crossed the lounge in slow, silent steps until he towered beside her, his large hand pressing lightly against the small of her back. Protective. Grounding.

Dangerous.

"You were supposed to wait for me," he murmured.

Akira tilted her head up at him, pink void-eyes glowing faintly beneath the fluorescent lights. "But I wanted strawberry milk now."

A sigh escaped him—long-suffering, impossibly fond.

"Hai."

Without another word, Kenshin reached into the machine with one hand.

Metal screamed softly.

The entire front panel bent inward just enough for the trapped drink to fall loose.

Akira gasped dramatically. "Sugoi~!"

Several humans stared in alarm.

Kenshin calmly picked up the bottle and placed it into her hands before any of them could process what they'd seen.

"There," he said quietly. "Satisfied?"

Akira hugged the drink to her chest with a bright smile. "You're sooo cool."

His expression softened in a way that would have terrified anyone who truly knew him.

For her alone, the ancient monster became gentle.

One businessman nearby continued staring at Akira a second too long.

Kenshin noticed instantly.

His crimson eyes flickered toward the man with cold, ancient warning.

The businessman went pale and abruptly looked away.

Akira leaned against Kenshin's arm, completely unbothered. "You're doing the scary face again."

"He was staring at you."

"He was staring at my boobs."

Kenshin's jaw tightened.

"…That as well."

Akira giggled, the sound airy and surreal. She reached up, fixing the collar of his black silk shirt with delicate fingers.

"You're jealous."

"No," he replied smoothly.

A pause.

Then, quieter—

"Protective."

Akira smiled knowingly.

Thunder rumbled overhead as Kenshin guided her back toward the secluded corner of the lounge, his hand never leaving her waist. Around them, humans resumed their conversations, unaware they were sharing space with two immortal predators dressed like elegance and fantasy.

Kenshin lowered his head slightly beside her ear.

"Stay close to me tonight, Akira."

His voice dropped into that deep, reverent tone reserved only for her.

"I do not trust this city with something so precious."
