You sit toward the back of the classroom, just one seat away from the desk beside the rear sliding door.
It's a relatively quiet spot. From here, most of the classroom is within view, while the noise from the larger groups of students tends to fade a little by the time it reaches the back.
Near the front of the classroom, however, the atmosphere is noticeably livelier.
Kita Ikuyo is sitting with two of her friends, the three of them huddled together in conversation. Kita's bright red hair catches the sunlight whenever she moves, and her expressions shift constantly as she talks.
"Wait, listen! You guys have to see this."
Kita holds her phone between them, scrolling through her Instagram feed before stopping on a picture.
"Look! Isn't this cat ridiculously cute?"
One of the girls leans over to get a better look.
"Aw, it's adorable!"
"Right?! And look at its face!"
Kita zooms in on the picture, practically glowing with excitement.
"It looks so grumpy, but apparently it's actually super affectionate. The owner said it follows them around the house all day."
"Hehe, that's pretty cute."
"I know! I'd totally want a cat like that."
Kita continues scrolling, already looking for another picture to show them.
"Ah, wait, there's another one! This one's even better."
"You're seriously obsessed with cats, Kita-chan."
"Eh? No I'm not!"
She pauses.
"...Okay, maybe a little."
The three girls quietly laugh together.
Kita grins, completely at ease as she continues chatting, effortlessly keeping the conversation alive.
For a moment, the classroom feels almost peaceful.
Then the sliding classroom door opens.
"Good morning, everyone."
The homeroom teacher steps inside, carrying a stack of papers beneath one arm.
Kita immediately lowers her phone.
"Ah!"
The two girls beside her quickly straighten up as the chatter throughout the classroom begins to die down.
"Come on, everyone. Take your seats. Homeroom is about to begin."
Chairs scrape against the floor as the students settle down.
The first period is about to start.
